Age of Wonders 4 Equipment Guide — Best Equipment Ranked

Complete Age of Wonders 4 equipment guide. Every equipment option ranked with stats, best builds, and how to get them.

Age of Wonders 4 is Triumph Studios' fantasy 4X strategy game that stands out from the genre with its deep faction customization system, letting you create entirely unique civilizations by combining body types, culture traits, and magical affinities. The tactical combat layer gives you direct control over individual units on hex-based battlefields, making wars feel personal rather than abstract. The Tome system replaces traditional tech trees with magical research that transforms your units and realm. With multiple DLC expansions adding new mechanics and content, AoW4 offers massive replayability through its procedurally generated realms and story-driven campaign scenarios.

Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Equipment Progression Path

The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Enchanted Forest
  2. Support Spells → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Siege Weapons → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. Tier 5 Units → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Equipment Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying — one strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Plan your Tome path before the game starts. Reaching Tier V in one affinity is usually better than spreading across multiple affinities at low tiers.
  • Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
