Barbedwire Studios and Digitalmindsoft released Gates of Hell: Ostfront on 11 June 2021, covering the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945 with more than 250 vehicles and 100 heavy weapons. Armour is modelled plate by plate with real thicknesses and angles, so an 85mm round can bounce off a Tiger's mantlet, kill the loader without setting the tank on fire, or cook off the ammunition depending on exactly where it lands. You can command it as a top-down real-time strategy game or take direct control of one rifleman or one tank gunner at any moment.

Resource management and crafting determine how quickly your power scales. This guide covers what to prioritize, where to farm, and how to avoid wasting resources on the wrong upgrades.

Upgrade Path

Early Game (The Siege of Sevastopol to Pavlov's House)

  1. Upgrade your starting equipment to functional level
  2. Craft basic defensive gear
  3. Save specialty materials, since you'll need them later
  4. Focus on T-34/85 once accessible

Mid Game (The Citadel)

  1. Push T-34/85 to mid-level upgrades
  2. Start collecting materials for Tiger I
  3. Craft situational consumables for boss fights
  4. Upgrade build-specific gear pieces

Late Game (Clash at Narva to The Koenigsberg Cauldron)

  1. Max out Tiger I. This is your top priority
  2. Complete your build's core gear set
  3. Craft endgame consumables
  4. Optional: upgrade secondary equipment for variety

Crafting Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Spreading upgrades across multiple equipment: Focus one weapon to max before diversifying.
  2. Hoarding materials: Use them. The game provides enough if you farm efficiently.
  3. Upgrading the wrong gear: Check our builds guide before investing.
  4. Ignoring The Citadel farming: This area has the best resource-to-time ratio in mid-game.
  5. Crafting consumables too early: Save specialty materials for late-game recipes.

Resource Efficiency Tips

  • Angle your hull before you fire, not after. The armour model uses real thickness and impact angle, so a Panzer IV sitting at roughly 30 degrees to an incoming shot presents far more effective plate than one facing square, and that difference decides whether a 76mm round penetrates.
  • Farm The Citadel during mid-game for the best return on time
  • Check the walkthrough to know when each resource becomes available
  • Match your farming route to your build. Some classes farm faster in certain areas
