This Celeste tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.
Characters Rankings
| Tier | Role | Rating | Playstyle |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Story climber | 8.5/10 | Balanced approach |
| A | Strawberry completionist | 8.5/10 | Clear a chapter for the story first, then return through chapter select and sweep the side rooms with the layout already in your head. |
| A | Assist Mode climber | 8.5/10 | Balanced approach |
| A | B-Side cassette runner | 8.5/10 | Finish an A-Side, grab its cassette, then run the B-Side while the chapter's central mechanic is still fresh. |
| B | Golden Strawberry runner | 7.5/10 | Practise the individual hard screens through chapter select until they are automatic, then attempt the full run and expect dozens of resets. |
Detailed Characters Analysis
Story climber (A-Tier)
Story climber is a competitive option in the current meta.
Best with: Dash. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Balanced stats
Strawberry completionist (A-Tier)
Targets all 175 ordinary strawberries across the eight chapters. Winged strawberries escape the moment Madeline touches the ground, and seeded strawberries need every seed in the room collected first, so both demand a route rather than improvisation.
Best with: Chapter select for replays, a route plan per chapter, patience with winged variants. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Route knowledge first, then air control, then dash conservation
Assist Mode climber (A-Tier)
Assist Mode climber is a competitive option in the current meta.
Best with: Wall jump. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Balanced stats
B-Side cassette runner (A-Tier)
Each chapter hides one cassette tape, and collecting it unlocks a much harder remixed version of that chapter. B-Sides drop the story and hand you dense rooms built around a single mechanic taken to its limit.
Best with: Cassette from each chapter, comfortable super and hyper inputs, chapter select. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Dash precision first, then wavedash and hyper consistency, then stamina discipline
Golden Strawberry runner (B-Tier)
A Golden Strawberry asks you to clear an entire chapter from the first screen to the last without dying once. It is the hardest thing in the game outside the community mod scene, and it turns a forty minute chapter into a single unbroken attempt.
Best with: Full route memorised, consistent hypers and wavedashes, no assists enabled. See our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Consistency over speed, then route optimisation, then advanced movement tech
Weapons Rankings
| Weapon | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dash | Crossing spike gaps and reaching ledges that a jump alone falls short of. | One air dash in eight directions, refilled by landing or by touching a refill crystal. |
| Wall climb | Vertical shafts and repositioning between wall jumps. | Holding grab sticks Madeline to a wall and drains stamina, which only recovers on the ground. |
| Wall jump | Climbing tall rooms without burning the stamina bar. | Jumping away from a wall does not need the grab button and does not cost stamina, which makes it the cheapest way to climb. |
| Dream Block | Traversing solid walls and setting up long chained dashes. | Introduced in Chapter 2, these dark blocks let Madeline dash straight through them and eject her at the far side in the direction she entered. |
| Feather | Long horizontal flights through spike corridors, especially in Chapter 4 and later. | Grabbing a feather turns Madeline into a steerable star for a few seconds, letting her fly through gaps that no dash reaches. |
Check our weapons guide for in-depth stats and comparisons.
Weapons Analysis
Dash: One air dash in eight directions, refilled by landing or by touching a refill crystal. It is both your movement extender and your only way to cross gaps that a jump cannot reach, so spending it is always a decision rather than a reflex.
Wall climb: Holding grab sticks Madeline to a wall and drains stamina, which only recovers on the ground. Tapping grab to reposition costs far less than hanging while you plan, and the flashing warning means you have about a second left.
Wall jump: Jumping away from a wall does not need the grab button and does not cost stamina, which makes it the cheapest way to climb. A neutral jump straight up the wall is a separate input worth learning, because it keeps you in the same column.
Dream Block: Introduced in Chapter 2, these dark blocks let Madeline dash straight through them and eject her at the far side in the direction she entered. Chaining several in a row is how the middle chapters build their longest sequences.
Feather: Grabbing a feather turns Madeline into a steerable star for a few seconds, letting her fly through gaps that no dash reaches. Control is analogue rather than gridded, so it rewards small stick adjustments rather than sharp turns.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Celeste centers on One air dash with eight directions and Climbing on a stamina meter. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- Story climber with Dash is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- Assist Mode toggles in the options builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
- Assist Mode climber remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- Strawberry completionist is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Wall jump offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Golden Strawberry runner builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
Quick Picks by Situation
| Situation | Best Role | Best Weapon | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall best | Story climber | Dash | Highest consistent performance |
| New player | Strawberry completionist | Wall climb | Most forgiving, teaches mechanics |
| Hard content | Assist Mode climber | Wall jump | Survivability when you need it |
| Group play | B-Side cassette runner | Dream Block | Utility and team support |
| Experienced player | Golden Strawberry runner | Feather | Unique challenge and high ceiling |
