Relic's Eastern Front sequel launched on 25 June 2013 with two armies and grew to five through standalone expansions. The base game ships the Soviet Red Army and the Wehrmacht Ostheer, The Western Front Armies adds US Forces and Oberkommando West, and The British Forces adds UKF. TrueSight line of sight, a three tier cover system and strict hard counters make it a slower, more deliberate real time strategy game than its unit counts suggest.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Retreat squads at three surviving models, not one

Retreat squads at three surviving models, not one. Reinforcing a damaged veterancy 2 squad costs a fraction of rebuilding it, and veterancy never comes back once the squad wipes.

2. Cut off territory instead of chasing capture points

Cut off territory instead of chasing capture points. A sector disconnected from your opponent's base stops paying them income even while they still stand on it.

3. Anti-tank guns are ambush weapons under TrueSight

Anti-tank guns are ambush weapons under TrueSight. Set them behind a hedge or a building corner so the first shot lands before the tank knows where it came from.

4. Every tank has weaker rear armor

Every tank has weaker rear armor. Circling a heavy with a medium is a real tactic, and a Jackson or an SU-85 sitting behind a Tiger beats it outright.

5. Machine guns lose to flanks and grenades, never to a frontal charge

Machine guns lose to flanks and grenades, never to a frontal charge. Send one squad wide while a second pins the gun from cover.

6. On winter maps keep a halftrack or a garrisoned building near your front squads

On winter maps keep a halftrack or a garrisoned building near your front squads. Frozen infantry take damage and move at a crawl, and a blizzard will quietly kill a squad you forgot about.

7. Pick your three Commanders before you queue rather than during the loading screen

Pick your three Commanders before you queue rather than during the loading screen. Committing to one mid-match locks out the other two for the rest of that game.

8. Smoke is the cheapest counter available

Smoke is the cheapest counter available. One mortar smoke round blinds a machine gun position long enough to walk a squad into grenade range.

9. You do not need every tech building

You do not need every tech building. US Forces can skip either the Lieutenant or the Captain and rush the Major, and OKW should place trucks for map presence instead of lining them up at base.

10. Watch munitions as closely as fuel

Watch munitions as closely as fuel. BAR and LMG upgrades, mines and grenades decide more early fights than a tank arriving two minutes sooner.

Advanced Strategies

Build Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For Soviet Red Army (A-Tier):

  • Focus on TrueSight line of sight combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: Conscripts
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For Wehrmacht Ostheer (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: MG42 heavy machine gun team
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how Company of Heroes 2's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

TrueSight line of sight + Three tier cover system: Units only see what they could physically see, so hedgerows, buildings and smoke genuinely hide an ambush rather than applying a vision circle. Combined with Three tier cover system, yellow cover cuts incoming small arms damage, green cover cuts more, and open ground or roads count as negative cover that makes squads easier to kill.

Commander loadout of three doctrines + Squad retreat, reinforcement and veterancy: Before a match you slot three Commanders per faction, and during the match you commit to exactly one. When paired with Squad retreat, reinforcement and veterancy, any squad can retreat to base at speed with reduced incoming accuracy, then reinforce for manpower.

ColdTech weather on winter maps scaling: Winter maps use ColdTech, where deep snow slows infantry and blizzards freeze squads that are not near a fire, a building or a halftrack. Vehicles crush paths through the snow that your infantry can then follow.

Equipment Efficiency

EquipmentBest Use CaseWhy
ConscriptsEarly map control and absorbing lossesThe Soviet six man line squad, cheap to build and cheap to reinforce, with Molotovs and anti-tank grenades unlocked from a tier upgrade.
MG42 heavy machine gun teamLocking a chokepoint or a road against infantryThe Wehrmacht heavy machine gun, with a wide arc, long suppression range and a slow setup time.
Panzer IVMid game pushes against infantry linesThe Wehrmacht workhorse medium tank, strong against infantry and adequate against light armor.
M36 Jackson tank destroyerKilling Panthers, Tigers and King Tigers at rangeThe US answer to heavy German armor, with long range and high penetration but paper thin armor of its own.
Churchill infantry tankLeading a slow push into a defended positionThe British heavy with enormous frontal armor and an unremarkable gun.

Location Efficiency

Langreskaya (1v1, all skill levels): A classic 1v1 map split by a river, with fuel points out on the flanks. Contesting the central crossing early is usually a trap because both sides can cover it cheaply.

Semoisky (1v1, infantry heavy play): A compact 1v1 map with tight lanes and heavy building cover. Machine guns and mortars dominate here more than on any other map in the classic pool.

Crossing in the Woods (2v2 team play): One of the most played 2v2 maps in the game, a wooded field with limited vehicle lanes. Tanks funnel into predictable paths, so anti-tank guns earn their manpower here.

Kholodny Ferma (1v1 and 2v2): Farmland that ships in Summer and Winter variants, with the winter version bringing ColdTech snow and blizzards into the fight. Community automatch data has both versions running below average win rates for the aggressor.

Minsk Pocket (2v2 team play): A popular 2v2 map with a long open middle and cover along the edges. Statistically it favors the defender, so early aggression straight through the center rarely pays off.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Charging a set up machine gun from the front. Suppression pins the squad in the open and the follow up mortar round finishes the job.
  2. Letting squads walk along roads and across fields. Open ground counts as negative cover, and squads evaporate under sustained fire there.
  3. Massing a single unit type. Counters are strict, and ten Riflemen with no anti-tank gun lose to one Panzer IV.
  4. Forgetting to reinforce after a fight. A four man Grenadier squad costs most of the upkeep of a full one and delivers half the firepower.
  5. Buying the base game and expecting all five armies. US Forces, Oberkommando West and British Forces all come from separate standalone expansions.

Pro Quick Tips

  • Anti-tank guns are ambush weapons under TrueSight. Set them behind a hedge or a building corner so the first shot lands before the tank knows where it came from.
  • Start with Wehrmacht Ostheer, switch to Soviet Red Army when ready
  • Invest in Conscripts above everything else
  • Clear areas in order: Langreskaya → Semoisky → Crossing in the Woods → Kholodny Ferma → Minsk Pocket. See our maps guide
  • TrueSight line of sight + Three tier cover system together are stronger than either alone
