Dragon's Dogma 2 is Capcom's open-world action RPG that doubles down on the original's unique pawn system and vocation-based combat. The world of Vermund and Battahl offers a massive interconnected map with no fast travel by default, encouraging genuine exploration and emergent encounters. Combat revolves around ten vocations ranging from melee Fighters to hybrid Mystic Spearhands, each with distinct weapon skills. The game features a true day-night cycle where nighttime is genuinely dangerous, and a pawn AI system where your companions learn from your behavior.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Vernworth
The capital city of Vermund and your primary hub for the first half of the game. Houses the Vocation Guild, multiple shops, and key story NPCs including the false Sovran. Place a Portcrystal here immediately.
Level/Difficulty: Level 1-20 Key Rewards: Vocation changes, main quests, Pawn Guild access
What to Do in Vernworth
- Learn vocation system. There are ten vocations: four basic (Fighter, Archer, Mage, Thief), three advanced (Warrior, Sorcerer, Magick Archer), and three hybrid (Mystic Spearhand, Trickster, Warfarer). Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Archer as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
- Place a Portcrystal in Vernworth, Battahl capital, and near the Sphinx location — these are the most-traveled routes
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Magick Bow or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand vocation system fundamentals
- Archer selected and functional
- Vernworth main content cleared
- Ready for Battahl
Phase 2: Early Game — Battahl
The beastren nation to the south, accessed through the mountain pass or by sea. Has its own Vocation Guild and unique quests. Significantly tougher enemies including Gorgons, Liches, and Drake variants. The Flamebearer Palace is a key story location.
Level/Difficulty: Level 25-45 Key Rewards: Advanced vocation unlocks, Battahl-exclusive gear, Drake materials
What to Do in Battahl
- Work on pawn system. You create one main pawn who travels with you permanently, plus hire two support pawns from other players via Riftstones. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Magick Bow if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Hire pawns 5-10 levels above yours for tough content; they cost more Rift Crystals but make a huge difference
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Volcanic Island.
- Consider whether Fighter might suit your playstyle better than Archer.
Phase 2 Checklist
- pawn system integrated into gameplay
- Magick Bow acquired
- Battahl fully cleared
- Ready for Volcanic Island
Phase 3: Mid Game — Volcanic Island
Endgame area accessible after certain story triggers. Features the toughest enemies in the base game and Dragonforged upgrade materials. The final confrontation with the Dragon takes place here.
Level/Difficulty: Level 45-60 Key Rewards: Dragonforged materials, endgame boss fights, true ending path
What to Do in Volcanic Island
- Master monster climbing. Large monsters like Griffins, Cyclopes, and Drakes can be climbed by grabbing onto them. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Greatsword. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Griffin encounters: shoot the wings with fire arrows to ground them, then climb and attack the head
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in camping and exploration for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- monster climbing mastered
- Greatsword acquired or in progress
- Volcanic Island fully cleared
- Ready for Sacred Arbor
Phase 4: Late Game — Sacred Arbor
Hidden elven settlement deep in the Vermund forest. Home to unique elf-crafted equipment and lore about the Arisen cycle. Requires solving environmental puzzles to access and contains high-level elf enemies nearby.
Level/Difficulty: Level 20-35 Key Rewards: Elf equipment, rare curatives, lore scrolls
What to Do in Sacred Arbor
- Finalize your build. You should be running Fighter or Archer with optimized gear.
- Greatsword should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- The Sphinx offers riddles with powerful unique rewards — save before each riddle as wrong answers are permanent
- affinity system optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Agamen Volcanic Island.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Greatsword upgraded to max
- Sacred Arbor fully cleared
- Ready for Agamen Volcanic Island
Phase 5: Endgame — Agamen Volcanic Island
Post-game area that opens during the Unmoored World sequence. The landscape transforms dramatically with new enemy placements and devastated versions of familiar locations. Time-limited exploration adds urgency to this endgame content.
Level/Difficulty: Level 50+ Key Rewards: Best-in-slot weapons, true ending, New Game Plus access
What to Do in Agamen Volcanic Island
- Agamen Volcanic Island tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Drake fights: target the glowing chest gem, use ice-element attacks for maximum damage
- The endgame loop: run Agamen Volcanic Island, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Mystic Spearhand for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where affinity system mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Agamen Volcanic Island fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Using all Ferrystones early without placing Portcrystals in strategic locations first
- Ignoring pawn inclinations — a Calm healer pawn set to Simple will charge into melee and die
- Selling Wakestones without realizing they revive you from death and are needed for a key quest
- Rushing the main story without exploring — many vocations, quests, and upgrades are in side content
- Not resting at inns to hard-save — camping only creates a soft save that deletes on load
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Place a Portcrystal in Vernworth, Battahl capital, and near the Sphinx location — these are the most-traveled routes
- Hire pawns 5-10 levels above yours for tough content; they cost more Rift Crystals but make a huge difference
- Griffin encounters: shoot the wings with fire arrows to ground them, then climb and attack the head
- The Sphinx offers riddles with powerful unique rewards — save before each riddle as wrong answers are permanent
- Drake fights: target the glowing chest gem, use ice-element attacks for maximum damage
