Subset Games, meaning Justin Ma and Matthew Davis, shipped this on 14 September 2012 after a Kickstarter that asked for 10,000 dollars and collected roughly twenty times that. You run a Federation ship through eight sectors with a Rebel fleet closing behind you, spending scrap on systems and weapons, and the run ends against a three phase Rebel Flagship in Sector 8. The free Advanced Edition update in April 2014 added the Lanius, hacking, mind control, the Clone Bay and the Backup Battery, and it is on by default now. Nothing is randomised in your favour, and a good run is mostly a sequence of decisions about what not to buy.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Pause and stagger
Pause and stagger. Charging three weapons and firing them in one instant strips three shield layers at once, where firing them as they finish charging lets shields regenerate between shots.
2. Buy the second shield layer before a third weapon, every time
Buy the second shield layer before a third weapon, every time. Two layers stop most sector one to three enemies outright, and the scrap saved on repairs pays for the weapon later.
3. The Rebel Flagship has a fixed loadout with four weapon mounts across three phases
The Rebel Flagship has a fixed loadout with four weapon mounts across three phases. Plan for its triple missile launcher specifically, since that is what kills unprepared ships.
4. Blue option events are the free scrap of FTL
Blue option events are the free scrap of FTL. Carrying a Slug, having a Medbay upgraded, or owning a specific system unlocks them, and they almost always resolve better than the default choice.
5. Halberd Beam pierces one shield layer and Glaive Beam pierces two
Halberd Beam pierces one shield layer and Glaive Beam pierces two. Every other beam in the game is stopped completely by a single layer, so pairing them with a shield stripper is mandatory.
6. Sell missile weapons you cannot supply
Sell missile weapons you cannot supply. An Artemis Missile with no ammunition is dead weight in a slot that a Flak Gun Mark I would use better.
7. Boarding is the highest scrap strategy in the game because killing the crew leaves the hull intact for a larger reward
Boarding is the highest scrap strategy in the game because killing the crew leaves the hull intact for a larger reward. Disable the enemy Medbay first or your boarders will fight the same crew forever.
8. Zoltan crew supply one power bar to whichever room they occupy
Zoltan crew supply one power bar to whichever room they occupy. Moving one from Engines to Weapons mid fight is a free reactor upgrade that costs nothing but a few seconds of walking.
9. Take Civilian sectors early and hostile sectors late
Take Civilian sectors early and hostile sectors late. Your ship in sector two cannot absorb the fights that your ship in sector five will want for the scrap.
10. Fuel is the one resource that ends runs silently
Fuel is the one resource that ends runs silently. If you drop below four fuel with no store in reach, start taking distress beacons even when the risk looks bad.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Kestrel Cruiser (A-Tier):
- Focus on Reactor power split across systems combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Burst Laser Mark II
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Engi Cruiser (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Halberd Beam
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how FTL: Faster Than Light's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Reactor power split across systems + Active pausing during combat: Every system needs reactor bars and you never have enough. Combined with Active pausing during combat, space pauses everything and you can still issue orders, target rooms, move crew and change power allocation.
Crew skills and boarding + Fuel, scrap and the advancing rebel fleet: Crew improve at whatever station they man, and each of the eight species has a hard rule attached: Engi repair at double speed and take half damage in melee, Rockmen carry 150 percent health and ignore fire, Zoltan supply one free power bar to whichever room they stand in, Lanius drain the air out of rooms they occupy. When paired with Fuel, scrap and the advancing rebel fleet, every jump costs one fuel and advances the rebel fleet behind you, so the map is a race rather than a tour.
The three phase Rebel Flagship scaling: Sector 8 ends against a Flagship with four weapon mounts, a boarding drone, and three separate phases that repair between fights. It is the one fight in the game you can prepare for precisely, because its loadout never changes: expect a triple missile launcher, an ion weapon and a beam.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Burst Laser Mark II | Any ship at any point in a run, and the backbone of every laser stack build | Two power, three shots, twelve second cooldown, and the single most recommended weapon in the game. |
| Halberd Beam | Pairing with lasers or ion weapons that drop the enemy to one shield layer or fewer | Three power, seventeen second cooldown, two damage per room, and unusually it pierces one shield layer, so it still lands one damage per room through a single barrier. |
| Flak Gun Mark I | Feeding a beam weapon by clearing shield layers on a short cycle | Two power, three projectiles, ten second cooldown, and no ammunition cost. |
| Glaive Beam | Late run ships with high evasion and a Cloaking system to cover the long charge | Four power, twenty five second cooldown, three damage per room and it pierces two shield layers. |
| Ion Blast Mark II | Locking down enemy shields so beams, drones or boarders can work unopposed | The fastest cycling ion weapon available. |
Location Efficiency
Civilian Sector (Sectors 1 to 3): The safest sector type on the map, with more shops, more stores and fewer forced fights than anything else. Take one early while your ship is still weak, and take a hostile sector instead once your loadout has come together and you need scrap rather than safety.
Nebula Sector (Any sector, most useful when you need time): Sensors do not work, the rebel fleet advances more slowly, and ion storms cut your reactor output in half inside affected beacons. Slug crew see through the fog, which is the one reason a Slug in the crew roster matters more here than anywhere else.
Mantis Homeworlds (Sectors 3 to 6): The most dangerous species sector in the game because Mantis ships board aggressively and Mantis crew win most melee fights. Bring a Medbay you can retreat to, and consider venting rooms rather than fighting boarders directly.
Abandoned Sector (Sectors 3 to 6, Advanced Edition only): Added by the Advanced Edition update along with the Lanius themselves. The sector runs on derelict stations and Lanius encounters, and Lanius crew drain the air from any room they stand in, which means fights here take place in vacuum more often than not.
The Last Stand (Sector 8, final): Sector 8, where the run ends. You get a short window to repair and buy at the Federation base before the Rebel Flagship arrives, and the fight runs across three separate phases with the Flagship repairing between them. Its loadout is fixed, so it is the only encounter you can plan for exactly.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Playing unpaused because it feels more skilful. Every strong player pauses constantly, and unstaggered weapon volleys are the single most common reason a run stalls in sector four.
- Upgrading Weapons power to run four weapons while still sitting on one shield layer, which turns every fight into a race you lose the moment a missile lands.
- Boarding a ship without disabling its Medbay, so the enemy crew heal faster than two Mantis can kill them and you lose boarders for nothing.
- Hoarding scrap for a store that never appears. Scrap in your pocket at the Flagship is worthless, so spend it by the end of sector six.
- Jumping into Sector 8 with a Glaive Beam and no Cloaking system, then discovering the twenty five second charge never completes against a Flagship that fires continuously.
Pro Quick Tips
- Pause and stagger. Charging three weapons and firing them in one instant strips three shield layers at once, where firing them as they finish charging lets shields regenerate between shots.
- Buy the second shield layer before a third weapon, every time. Two layers stop most sector one to three enemies outright, and the scrap saved on repairs pays for the weapon later.
- The Rebel Flagship has a fixed loadout with four weapon mounts across three phases. Plan for its triple missile launcher specifically, since that is what kills unprepared ships.
- Start with Engi Cruiser, switch to Kestrel Cruiser when ready
- Invest in Burst Laser Mark II above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Civilian Sector → Nebula Sector → Mantis Homeworlds → Abandoned Sector → The Last Stand. See our maps guide
- Reactor power split across systems + Active pausing during combat together are stronger than either alone
