Hogwarts Legacy Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Hogwarts Legacy walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Hogwarts Legacy is Avalanche Software's open-world action RPG set in the Wizarding World of the 1800s, long before Harry Potter's era. You play as a late-enrolling fifth-year student at Hogwarts with a unique ability to see and wield ancient magic. The game features spell-based combat with a rock-paper-scissors shield system, Merlin Trials puzzles scattered across the open world, the Room of Requirement as your personal base, and one of the most detailed recreations of Hogwarts castle ever made.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Hogwarts Castle

The most detailed recreation of Hogwarts ever made. Hundreds of rooms, secret passages, moving staircases, and hidden areas to discover. Classes teach new spells. Field Guide Pages and Demiguise Statues are hidden throughout. Spend hours just exploring.

Level/Difficulty: All levels Key Rewards: Spell unlocks from classes, Field Guide pages, Demiguise Statues, hidden areas

What to Do in Hogwarts Castle

  1. Learn spell combos. Combat revolves around combining spells: Levioso lifts enemies, then basic attacks juggle them. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Beast Master as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Levioso into basic attacks is the strongest early combo — lift an enemy, then attack repeatedly to juggle them without letting them fight back. Works on most non-boss enemies.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Expelliarmus or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand spell combos fundamentals
  • Beast Master selected and functional
  • Hogwarts Castle main content cleared
  • Ready for Hogsmeade

Phase 2: Early Game — Hogsmeade

The wizarding village with shops for gear, potions, broomsticks, and Room of Requirement items. Tomes and Scrolls sells decoration items. Gladrags sells gear appearances. J. Pippin sells potions and recipes. Visit regularly for inventory restocks.

Level/Difficulty: Level 5+ Key Rewards: Gear purchases, potion recipes, broom upgrades, Room of Requirement items

What to Do in Hogsmeade

  1. Work on Room of Requirement. A customizable personal space that serves as your base of operations. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Expelliarmus if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Complete Merlin Trials for inventory slots — you start with very limited gear storage. Prioritize Merlin Trials early to avoid constant gear management.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Feldcroft.
  5. Consider whether Dark Arts Build might suit your playstyle better than Beast Master.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Room of Requirement integrated into gameplay
  • Expelliarmus acquired
  • Hogsmeade fully cleared
  • Ready for Feldcroft

Phase 3: Mid Game — Feldcroft

A village in the Feldcroft Region central to Sebastian Sallow's Dark Arts questline. Contains Undercroft access, poacher camps, and progressively darker story content. Your choices here determine whether Sebastian goes down the dark path.

Level/Difficulty: Level 15+ Key Rewards: Dark Arts quest progression, Unforgivable Curses, Sebastian's story

What to Do in Feldcroft

  1. Master beast breeding. Magical beasts are rescued from poacher camps and housed in Vivariums within the Room of Requirement. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Avada Kedavra. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Room of Requirement generates infinite money through beast materials and potions. Set up Vivariums early and breed beasts for a passive material income.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in talent tree for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • beast breeding mastered
  • Avada Kedavra acquired or in progress
  • Feldcroft fully cleared
  • Ready for Keenbridge

Phase 4: Late Game — Keenbridge

A hamlet in the southeastern region with unique side quests and bandit camps. The surrounding area has Merlin Trials, treasure vaults, and magical beast dens. Good for mid-game exploration and material farming.

Level/Difficulty: Level 10-20 Key Rewards: Side quests, Merlin Trials, beast rescue locations, treasure vaults

What to Do in Keenbridge

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Dark Arts Build or Beast Master with optimized gear.
  2. Avada Kedavra should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Unforgivable Curses are game-breakingly strong with the right talents. Complete Sebastian's questline as early as possible (despite the dark story implications).
  4. Merlin trials optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Forbidden Forest.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Avada Kedavra upgraded to max
  • Keenbridge fully cleared
  • Ready for Forbidden Forest

Phase 5: Endgame — Forbidden Forest

A vast dark forest with dangerous creatures, spiders, centaurs, and hidden secrets. Multiple main story quests take you here. Nighttime exploration is significantly more dangerous. Contains unique beast species.

Level/Difficulty: Level 20+ Key Rewards: Unique beasts, story progression, rare ingredient spawns

What to Do in Forbidden Forest

  1. Forbidden Forest tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Explore Hogwarts walls and halls for hidden Demiguise Statues — these unlock Alohomora levels, which open increasingly secure locked doors throughout the game.
  3. The endgame loop: run Forbidden Forest, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Ancient Magic Build for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Merlin trials mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Forbidden Forest fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Not completing Merlin Trials — without additional gear slots, you'll constantly be managing a full inventory and missing loot. Do Merlin Trials as you encounter them.
  • Skipping Sebastian Sallow's questline for moral reasons — the Dark Arts spells (especially Avada Kedavra) are the strongest in the game. The game lets you choose how to use them.
  • Spreading talent points across all trees — focus on one combat style's tree plus Core talents. 26 total points means you can't fill multiple trees.
  • Ignoring the Room of Requirement beast mechanics — beast materials are needed for the best gear upgrades. Start rescuing and breeding beasts in mid-game.
  • Selling gear without checking traits — legendary traits on lower-level gear can be more valuable than generic high-level gear. Always check trait descriptions.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Levioso into basic attacks is the strongest early combo — lift an enemy, then attack repeatedly to juggle them without letting them fight back. Works on most non-boss enemies.
  2. Complete Merlin Trials for inventory slots — you start with very limited gear storage. Prioritize Merlin Trials early to avoid constant gear management.
  3. Room of Requirement generates infinite money through beast materials and potions. Set up Vivariums early and breed beasts for a passive material income.
  4. Unforgivable Curses are game-breakingly strong with the right talents. Complete Sebastian's questline as early as possible (despite the dark story implications).
  5. Explore Hogwarts walls and halls for hidden Demiguise Statues — these unlock Alohomora levels, which open increasingly secure locked doors throughout the game.
