MapleStory has been running since 2003 and now carries more than forty playable classes split across Explorers, Cygnus Knights, Heroes, Resistance, Nova, Sengoku, Flora, Anima and Jianghu. The level cap sits at 300, fifth job opens at 200 and sixth job with the HEXA Matrix arrives at 260. The side scrolling combat has barely changed, but everything past level 200 is a symbol grind measured in daily quests rather than in skill.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Job advancement line
Classes advance at levels 10, 30, 60 and 100, then take fifth job at 200 and sixth job at 260. Each advancement adds a skill tab instead of replacing the old one, so fourth job skills from level 100 stay in your rotation permanently.
Arcane and Sacred Symbols
Arcane River zones from Vanishing Journey through Lachelein and Arcana to Limina require Arcane Symbols before your damage registers, and Grandis zones from Cernium to Tallahart require Sacred Symbols. Both come from daily quests, which makes the endgame a login schedule.
V Matrix and HEXA Matrix
Fifth job slots Nodestones into the V Matrix, where boost nodes raise three linked skills at once and level 25 is the standard target. Sixth job then adds the HEXA Matrix, fed by Sol Erda and Sol Erda Fragments earned from Grandis grinding.
Legion and Link Skills
Every character you push to level 60 joins the Legion board and grants a stat bonus, and characters with Link Skills pass a permanent buff to your main. This is why serious accounts keep a dozen mules that nobody actually plays.
Star Force and potentials
Gear is enhanced with Star Force up to 25 stars, with guaranteed success at 5, 10 and 15 and a destruction risk above that. Potential lines rolled with cubes usually matter more than star count, so a well rolled 17 star item can beat a badly rolled 22 star one.

Builds Overview
| Build | Tier | Playstyle | Key Stats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night Lord | S | Ranged single target damage from a safe distance, weak crowd clear | LUK, then Attack percent, Boss Damage, Ignore Defense, Critical Damage |
| Bishop | A | Supports the party, farms efficiently, contributes moderate damage | INT, then Attack percent and Buff Duration |
| Adele | S | Melee range with generous hitboxes, forgiving rotation | STR, then Attack percent, Boss Damage, Ignore Defense |
| Hoyoung | A | Fast, mobile, rotation heavy across three separate skill sets | LUK, then Attack percent, Ignore Defense, Boss Damage |
| Kain | S | Ranged with mode switching, strong at both grinding and bossing | DEX, then Attack percent, Boss Damage, Critical Damage |
Night Lord (S-Tier): The Explorer thief that throws stars, built around Quad Star and Four Seasons with strong single target burst. It has been a reliable boss mule and a strong main for most of the game's history.
Bishop (A-Tier): The Explorer support mage carrying Advanced Blessing, Holy Symbol and Resurrection. Every serious boss party wants one, and the drop and experience buff makes it the standard farming main.
Adele (S-Tier): The Flora warrior who fights with floating blades, using Aether Forge and Order for both mobbing and bossing. Simple input, high output, and one of the most recommended classes for new players.
Hoyoung (A-Tier): The Anima thief built around cycling Heaven, Earth and Human techniques, with strong mobility and good crowd clear. Rewarding to play well and awkward to play casually.
Kain (S-Tier): The Nova archer who swaps between bow, dagger and chain modes through the Strike Arrow and Falling Dust lines. High ceiling burst and excellent map coverage while grinding.

Equipment Guide
| Equipment | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Pensalir weapon | The level 140 crafted tier that most characters use as their first real weapon after the free early game gear runs out. | Levels 140 to 150 while you save for the next tier |
| Fafnir weapon | The level 150 tier, obtainable from Root Abyss bosses and from crafting. | Levels 150 to 160 and early boss progression |
| AbsoLab weapon | The level 160 tier crafted from Chaos Root Abyss and Hard Magnus materials. | Levels 160 to 200 and the whole early Arcane River stretch |
| Arcane Umbra weapon | The level 200 tier from Lotus, Damien and the Arcane River bosses. | Levels 200 and up, and everything from Lucid through Verus Hilla |
| Genesis weapon | An Arcane Umbra weapon liberated through the Black Mage questline, which adds a substantial permanent damage increase without changing the level requirement. | Accounts that have cleared the Black Mage and are pushing Kalos and Kaling |
Pensalir weapon: The level 140 crafted tier that most characters use as their first real weapon after the free early game gear runs out. Cheap enough to star force without regret while you learn the systems.
Fafnir weapon: The level 150 tier, obtainable from Root Abyss bosses and from crafting. It is the first weapon worth putting real cubes into because it lasts long enough to justify the mesos.
AbsoLab weapon: The level 160 tier crafted from Chaos Root Abyss and Hard Magnus materials. Many players stay on AbsoLab far longer than the level range suggests because the next tier is expensive.
Arcane Umbra weapon: The level 200 tier from Lotus, Damien and the Arcane River bosses. This is the endgame weapon for most accounts and the base that later gets liberated.
Genesis weapon: An Arcane Umbra weapon liberated through the Black Mage questline, which adds a substantial permanent damage increase without changing the level requirement.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Henesys | Levels 1 to 30 | Starting quests, early equipment, Maple Island graduation |
| Vanishing Journey | Levels 200 to 210 | Arcane Symbol: Vanishing Journey, Erda Spectrum entry |
| Lachelein | Levels 215 to 220 | Arcane Symbol: Lachelein, Lucid boss access |
| Cernium | Levels 260 to 265 | Sacred Symbol: Cernium, Sol Erda Fragments, sixth job progress |
| Odium | Levels 270 and above | Sacred Symbol: Odium, Sol Erda Fragments |
Henesys: The Explorer hub town in Victoria Island, full of quest givers, the free market entrance and the mushroom fields that every account has grinded at some point.
Vanishing Journey: The first Arcane River region and the wall where new players discover Arcane Force. Without symbols your damage barely registers, so the daily quest here is non negotiable.
Lachelein: The dream city Arcane River zone, home to the Lucid boss fight and the Midnight Chaser party quest. Popular for grinding because of dense maps.
Cernium: The first Grandis region, where Sacred Symbols replace Arcane Symbols and the story shifts away from the Black Mage. The daily coupon quest here is one of the more generous ones.
Odium: A later Grandis region with a daily quest that asks for 500 monster kills. Dense mob spawns make it one of the better places to accumulate Sol Erda Fragments while doing the daily anyway.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Do your symbol dailies before anything else in a session. Arcane and Sacred Symbols are hard capped by daily quests, so a missed day is permanently lost progress that no amount of grinding on another day can recover.
- Build Legion before you build gear. Every character parked at level 60 adds a permanent stat bonus to your main and the board's ranks scale with total levels, so a weekend spent making mules is worth more than several hours of grinding on one character.
- Link Skills come from a second character, not from your main, and several of the strongest ones only need a modest level. Mercedes, Phantom and Kanna links are worth making a character for even if you never play them past the unlock.
- Roll potential on gear before dumping stars into it. Star Force above 15 can destroy the item, and losing an unrolled piece costs mesos while losing a triple line legendary piece costs weeks.
- Grinding in Grandis produces Sol Erda Fragments passively, so choose your training map by fragment rate rather than raw experience once you are past 260. HEXA skill upgrades consume a lot of them and there is no shortcut.
- Sixth job HEXA cores should be dumped into one damage skill first rather than spread evenly. Partially levelled cores across four skills produce noticeably less damage than one core taken high, and Sol Erda income is the bottleneck.
- Burning World and similar event servers hand out multiple levels per level up in the early ranges, which turns the 1 to 200 stretch from a grind into a weekend. Starting a new class outside of an event is a choice, not a requirement.
- Boss crystals are weekly income capped per account, not per character, so run bosses on the characters that clear fastest rather than on every character you own. Mesos from crystals are the main funding source for cubes and star force.
- Arcane Symbol growth is fastest if you keep every unlocked region's daily running rather than focusing on one. The force requirement of the next region is checked against your total, so spreading symbols is usually better than maxing one.
- Do not chase the newest class every patch. The account wide systems, Legion, Link Skills, symbols and mesos, all carry over, but the character specific ones, gear, potential and HEXA, do not, so a class switch resets the expensive half.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping symbol dailies and stalling on Arcane Force.
- Star forcing gear before rolling its potential.
- Ignoring Legion and Link Skills until level 250.
- Spreading HEXA cores evenly instead of picking one skill.
- Rerolling to a new class after gearing the old one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the level cap in MapleStory?
300 as of 2026. Fifth job unlocks at 200 and sixth job with the HEXA Matrix unlocks at 260, so the last hundred levels are where most of the progression systems actually live.
Which class should a new MapleStory player pick?
Adele and Kain are the standard recommendations because both have generous hitboxes, straightforward rotations and strong clear speed at every stage. Night Lord is a good pick if you prefer ranged single target play, and Bishop if you want to be wanted in party content.
What are Arcane and Sacred Symbols?
They are equipment that grants Arcane Force or Sacred Power, which your damage is checked against in Arcane River and Grandis maps. Without enough of it your hits are reduced to almost nothing, and symbols only grow through daily quests in each region.
Is MapleStory free to play or pay to win?
It is free to download and play, funded by cosmetics and by cubes and star force protection from the cash shop. Everything is obtainable in game, but reaching a competitive damage range without spending takes a much longer meso grind.
How important is Legion?
Very. The Legion board gives permanent stat bonuses based on characters at level 60 and above, and higher Legion ranks unlock additional attack and stat nodes. Most experienced players treat mule levelling as a core part of progression rather than a side activity.
