Monolith shipped Middle-earth: Shadow of War on 10 October 2017, scaling the Nemesis System up from roaming patrols to five fortresses with named garrisons. Talion and Celebrimbor forge a new Ring of Power and take Mordor region by region, turning orc captains into branded followers instead of just killing them. The game launched with a paid Market selling gold and war chests, and Warner Bros. removed it entirely on 17 July 2018, which cut the grind out of the Shadow Wars endgame and replaced it with a shorter Epilogue that rewards the Masks of the Nazgul.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Combat
Combat is a top-performing option in Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Sword | The primary melee slot and the one that benefits most from a Warrior Gem, since it is where your hit streaks turn into Execution damage. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | The Nemesis System | Every orc captain carries a personal list of strengths and weaknesses, and the game remembers what happened between you. |
How to Play Combat
Combat focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Sword does the damage and The Nemesis System keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Predator
Predator is a strong option in Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Dagger | The stealth weapon, used for assassinations and Brutalize, and it scales with the Predator tree rather than with open fighting. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Domination and branding | Once Celebrimbor's Ring is upgraded, you can brand a weakened captain instead of executing him and he joins your army. |
How to Play Predator
Predator focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair Dagger with Domination and branding and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Ranged
Ranged is a strong option in Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Bow | Fires on Focus, which recharges rather than using ammunition, so the real limit is how fast your Focus comes back. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Fortress assaults | Each of the five regions has one fortress held by an Overlord with War Chiefs beneath him. |
How to Play Ranged
Ranged focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Fortress assaults covers the gap Bow leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Wraith
Wraith is a specialized option in Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Armour | One of the two defensive slots alongside the Cloak, and the pair is where Life Gems earn their place through health and healing effects. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Orc tribes and their perks | Captains belong to tribes such as Machine, Mystic, Marauder, Warmonger, Feral, Terror and Dark, and the tribe decides both their toys and their legendary gear drops. |
How to Play Wraith
Wraith focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Orc tribes and their perks rather than raw numbers, and Armour is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Mounted
Mounted is a specialized option in Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Ring | The single accessory slot and the natural home for a Wealth Gem, since Mirian pays for training and upgrading your entire army after the Market removal. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | The Epilogue and Masks of the Nazgul | The post campaign content originally shipped as Shadow Wars, a long sequence of defence sieges that leaned on the paid Market. |
How to Play Mounted
Mounted focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Ring and The Epilogue and Masks of the Nazgul pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Predator: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Combat once you understand core mechanics and have access to Sword
- Keep a Ranged setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Mounted for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Brand captains rather than executing them, because a branded orc keeps his level and traits and fights for you during the fortress assault in that region.
- Check a captain's trait list before committing, since Iron Will blocks domination outright and you will waste the whole approach trying.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
