Monster Hunter Rise reached PC on January 12, 2022, roughly ten months after its Switch debut, and it is built around Kamura Village and the Rampage. The Wirebug is the headline change: it lets all 14 weapon types climb walls, cancel knockdown animations and mount monsters in mid air. Magnamalo is the flagship, with Wind Serpent Ibushi and Thunder Serpent Narwa closing out the base story.

MONSTER HUNTER RISE features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Shrine Ruins: Starting Area

The first map and the most forgiving. Great Izuchi, Aknosom and Arzuros live here, and the vertical shrine structures are ideal for practising Wiredash traversal.

Frost Islands: Early Game

Snowfields holding Khezu, Goss Harag, Lagombi and Barioth. The terrain does more work than the weather, with ice slides that carry you between areas faster than running.

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Wyvern Riding. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for Great Sword if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in Sandy Plains.

Sandy Plains: Mid Game

Desert map split between an open surface and a cave system below, hosting Diablos, Rathian and Kulu-Ya-Ku. Sandstorm areas cut visibility in the outer regions.

Flooded Forest: Late Game

Waterlogged map where deep sections slow melee weapons badly. Mizutsune, Almudron, Somnacanth and Royal Ludroth all use the water far better than you can.

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Long Sword should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Rampage quests mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Lava Caverns.

Lava Caverns: Endgame

Split between a scorching upper layer and a cooler flooded lower layer. Rakna-Kadaki and Volvidon appear here, and the vertical shafts reward Wirebug confidence more than any other base map.

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Aerial mounter for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Shrine Ruins → Frost Islands → Sandy Plains → Flooded Forest → Lava Caverns. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
