Returnal Equipment Guide — Best Equipment Ranked

Complete Returnal equipment guide. Every equipment option ranked with stats, best builds, and how to get them.

Returnal is Housemarque's third-person roguelike shooter where astronaut Selene crash-lands on the alien planet Atropos and is trapped in a time loop. Each death resets the procedurally generated world, but permanent unlocks like weapon traits, ether currency, and traversal abilities carry between runs. The combat blends bullet-hell patterns with responsive third-person shooting, and the DualSense-inspired mechanics (adaptive triggers for alt-fire) translate well to PC. Two distinct acts with three biomes each offer a complete story that rewards repeated playthroughs with cryptic narrative reveals.

Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Equipment Progression Path

The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Overgrown Ruins
  2. Electropylon Driver → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Dreadbound → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. Hollowseeker → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Equipment Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying — one strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Adrenaline Level 3+ increases proficiency gain — maintaining adrenaline means finding higher-level weapons faster
  • Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
