Sea of Thieves Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Sea of Thieves walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Sea of Thieves is the definitive pirate sandbox where every ship on the horizon is crewed by real players who might trade, ally, or attack on sight. The sailing model is the best in gaming — managing sails, anchor, wheel, and cannons as a coordinated crew creates moments of genuine teamwork unmatched by other multiplayer games. The game has transformed since its sparse 2018 launch into a content-rich experience with 11 Tall Tales (story campaigns), Trading Companies with unique voyage types, world events, Pirate Legend endgame, and seasonal content. The 2024 PS5 launch brought crossplay, doubling the active playerbase.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Ancient Isles

The central region with moderate difficulty and diverse island types. Good for learning the game with a mix of easy and moderate threats. Ancient Isles islands are visually distinct with tribal ruins and underground caves. Plunder Outpost and Ancient Spire Outpost serve as selling locations.

Level/Difficulty: All levels (starting region) Key Rewards: Balanced loot, moderate threats, good learning environment

What to Do in Ancient Isles

  1. Learn sailing. Your ship has individually adjustable sails (angle and length), an anchor, a wheel, and a map table. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Cannoneer as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Raise an Emissary flag at any Outpost for your active Trading Company. At Grade 5 Emissary, all gold and reputation earned is multiplied by 2.5x. Grade increases from completing voyages and turning in relevant loot.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Blunderbuss or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand sailing fundamentals
  • Cannoneer selected and functional
  • Ancient Isles main content cleared
  • Ready for The Wilds

Phase 2: Early Game — The Wilds

A darker, more dangerous region with fog, rain, and aggressive skeleton spawns. The Wilds have the best atmosphere and the most dangerous island layouts. Fort of the Damned (highest-reward fort event) spawns here.

Level/Difficulty: Intermediate Key Rewards: Fort of the Damned, atmospheric exploration, Reaper's Hideout (sell stolen loot)

What to Do in The Wilds

  1. Work on treasure hunting. Voyages from Trading Companies send you to dig up treasure chests, hunt bounty skulls, deliver trade goods, or solve riddle maps. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Blunderbuss if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Always check behind your ship every 30-60 seconds. The most common PvP ambush is a ship approaching from your blind spot while you're focused on an island.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Shores of Plenty.
  5. Consider whether Helmsman might suit your playstyle better than Cannoneer.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • treasure hunting integrated into gameplay
  • Blunderbuss acquired
  • The Wilds fully cleared
  • Ready for Shores of Plenty

Phase 3: Mid Game — Shores of Plenty

The brightest, most colorful region with clear waters and easy navigation. Best for new players learning sailing and treasure hunting. The islands are smaller and easier to navigate. Multiple outposts provide convenient selling locations.

Level/Difficulty: Beginner-friendly Key Rewards: Easy navigation, multiple outposts, clear visibility for threat detection

What to Do in Shores of Plenty

  1. Master ship combat. Cannons deal hull damage that causes flooding, chainshot dismasts enemy ships, blunderbombs stagger crews, and firebombs set ships ablaze. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Cutlass. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Bucket water out of your ship WHILE it's sinking — bucketing buys time for repairs. Prioritize: bucket → repair lowest holes → bucket → repair remaining holes.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in world events for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • ship combat mastered
  • Cutlass acquired or in progress
  • Shores of Plenty fully cleared
  • Ready for Devil's Roar

Phase 4: Late Game — Devil's Roar

A volcanic region where islands periodically erupt, dealing damage and launching rocks. Geysers stun players. Devil's Roar voyages reward double gold and reputation due to the hazardous environment. Experienced crews farm the Roar for fastest reputation grinding.

Level/Difficulty: Advanced Key Rewards: 2x gold/reputation multiplier, Ashen loot (higher value), volcanic challenges

What to Do in Devil's Roar

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Helmsman or Cannoneer with optimized gear.
  2. Cutlass should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Chainshot the enemy mast during ship combat. A dismasted ship can barely move, letting you circle and bombard freely. Carry 10+ chainshots at all times.
  4. reputation grinding optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Sea of the Damned.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Cutlass upgraded to max
  • Devil's Roar fully cleared
  • Ready for Sea of the Damned

Phase 5: Endgame — Sea of the Damned

A supernatural region accessed through Tall Tales (story campaigns) or specific portals. Contains ghost ships, supernatural enemies, and unique narrative content. The Ferry of the Damned (respawn location) exists here, and certain Tall Tales have dramatic sequences in this realm.

Level/Difficulty: Tall Tale progression Key Rewards: Tall Tale completion, unique cosmetics, narrative content, Pirate Lord encounters

What to Do in Sea of the Damned

  1. Sea of the Damned tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Tucking (hiding on an enemy ship) lets you steal loot, drop anchor during battles, or assassinate crew at critical moments. Hide in crow's nests, behind barrels, or on the bowsprit.
  3. The endgame loop: run Sea of the Damned, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Navigator for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where reputation grinding mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Sea of the Damned fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Hoarding loot on your ship for hours without selling — the longer you sail with treasure, the more you risk losing everything to a single PvP encounter. Sell frequently.
  • Anchoring at islands instead of raising sails — an anchored ship takes 10+ seconds to move. Raise sails completely instead, which lets you drop sails and leave instantly when threats appear.
  • Ignoring the Tutorial (Maiden Voyage) — it teaches core mechanics, gives free gold, and can be replayed for resources. New players who skip it miss fundamental sailing and combat concepts.
  • Storing gunpowder kegs on your ship — a single cannon hit to your keg storage can sink your ship instantly. Use kegs offensively (throw at enemy ships) or leave them.
  • Not using the Emissary system — the 2.5x gold multiplier at Grade 5 means leaving an emissary flag down effectively cuts your income by 60%.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Raise an Emissary flag at any Outpost for your active Trading Company. At Grade 5 Emissary, all gold and reputation earned is multiplied by 2.5x. Grade increases from completing voyages and turning in relevant loot.
  2. Always check behind your ship every 30-60 seconds. The most common PvP ambush is a ship approaching from your blind spot while you're focused on an island.
  3. Bucket water out of your ship WHILE it's sinking — bucketing buys time for repairs. Prioritize: bucket → repair lowest holes → bucket → repair remaining holes.
  4. Chainshot the enemy mast during ship combat. A dismasted ship can barely move, letting you circle and bombard freely. Carry 10+ chainshots at all times.
  5. Tucking (hiding on an enemy ship) lets you steal loot, drop anchor during battles, or assassinate crew at critical moments. Hide in crow's nests, behind barrels, or on the bowsprit.
