This Sniper Elite 5 tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Weapons Rankings
| Weapon | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| M.1903 | First playthroughs and learning to read wind before better rifles unlock | The American bolt action you start the campaign with, sitting in the middle of every stat with no glaring weakness. |
| Karabiner 98 | Unsuppressed long range work timed against generators and aircraft | Unlocked in mission 2, Occupied Residence, by killing the kill list target with the chateau chandelier rather than a bullet. |
| M1A Carbine | Suppressed infiltration runs and defending yourself during an Invasion | The quietest rifle in the campaign and the fastest firing, at the cost of stopping power. |
| M1A1 Gov. | Room clearing and every fight that starts after you have been spotted | Available from the opening mission and the strongest secondary once the workbench parts stack up. |
| Welrod | Removing one man silently when a melee takedown is not possible | An integrally suppressed pistol handed to you in mission 1 that kills in one hit at contact range and reloads a single round at a time. |

Weapons Analysis
M.1903: The American bolt action you start the campaign with, sitting in the middle of every stat with no glaring weakness. Its modest muzzle velocity makes it a good teacher because the drop is visible enough to learn from at 200 metres.
Karabiner 98: Unlocked in mission 2, Occupied Residence, by killing the kill list target with the chateau chandelier rather than a bullet. It hits harder than the M.1903 and takes a heavy barrel well, which is what makes the long shots reliable.
M1A Carbine: The quietest rifle in the campaign and the fastest firing, at the cost of stopping power. Suppressed it becomes a stealth tool rather than a sniper rifle, and it will fail to kill on a torso hit at range where the Karabiner would not.
M1A1 Gov.: Available from the opening mission and the strongest secondary once the workbench parts stack up. An extended magazine and a compensator turn it into the answer to any alarm that you cannot outrun.
Welrod: An integrally suppressed pistol handed to you in mission 1 that kills in one hit at contact range and reloads a single round at a time. It exists for the guard who rounds a corner into you, not for firefights.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Sniper Elite 5 centers on Ballistics and bullet drop and X-ray kill cam. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- Long range marksman with M.1903 is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- Sound masking builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
- Trap and demolition specialist remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- Silent infiltrator is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- M1A Carbine offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Invasion duellist builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
