Sultan's Game is a dark fantasy resource management RPG built around a single cruel loop. Every week a card is drawn, Carnality, Extravagance, Conquest or Bloodshed, and you have seven days to satisfy its demand or meet the executioner. The game ships with more than fifty endings, and most of them are bad.
Combat in Sultan's Game rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Weekly card draw
Each week hands you one of four decrees. You do not choose it, and refusing to satisfy it ends the run, so your preparation has to cover all four possibilities rather than the one you prefer.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Seven day deadline
Every card gives you seven in game days. Actions consume days, so the real puzzle is sequencing tasks that fit inside the window rather than finding the theoretically best action.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Ally deployment
Allies are assigned to tasks and are unavailable while working. Sending your strongest character on a long errand at the wrong moment is how otherwise safe weeks turn fatal.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Resource and secret management
Wealth, influence and secrets are all spendable. Secrets in particular act as a hold over people, and holding one back is often worth more than cashing it in early.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Branching endings
Choices compound into more than fifty endings. Runs diverge early, so a decision made in the first month frequently decides which endings are still reachable in the last.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Weekly card draw + Seven day deadline
Each week hands you one of four decrees. When combined with Seven day deadline, every card gives you seven in game days. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Ally deployment + Resource and secret management
Allies are assigned to tasks and are unavailable while working. Paired with Resource and secret management, wealth, influence and secrets are all spendable. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Branching endings as a Multiplier
Choices compound into more than fifty endings. Runs diverge early, so a decision made in the first month frequently decides which endings are still reachable in the last. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Branching endings optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Weekly card draw for maximum damage windows
- Chain Seven day deadline and Ally deployment for combo damage
- Use Resource and secret management to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Build a household that can answer any of the four decrees at a basic level rather than one that answers a single decree brilliantly. The draw is not yours to control, and a specialist run dies the first week its card does not come up.
- Position using Weekly card draw to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Seven day deadline: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Your estate but will get you killed in The underground.
