Creative Assembly and SEGA released Total War: SHOGUN 2 on 15 March 2011, opening the campaign in 1545 and handing every clan the same win condition: take Kyoto and hold it. Nine clans ship in the base game, each with one signature discount, from Shimazu katana samurai to Mori warships. Fall of the Samurai is a separate standalone expansion set during the 1860s Boshin War, so its Gatling guns and ironclads never show up in the Sengoku campaign covered here.
Boss fights are where Total War: SHOGUN 2 tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Kyoto Bosses
Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Turn 40 and later on a long campaign Recommended build: Shimazu with Yari Ashigaru
Strategy
The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Fame climbs as you capture provinces, and somewhere around 13 to 18 provinces every neutral and friendly clan turns on you in the same handful of turns. This is your primary tool here.
Key tips:
- Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
- Use Realm Divide to create safe windows.
- Yari Ashigaru is enough to handle everything here.
Owari Bosses
Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Turns 1 to 15 as an Oda start Recommended build: Shimazu with Yari Ashigaru
Strategy
Early game bosses test your understanding of Chi and Bushido arts research. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.
Key tips:
- Chi and Bushido arts research is critical for these fights.
- Farm Yari Ashigaru upgrades if you're struggling.
- Consider switching to Shimazu if your current setup isn't working.
Kai Bosses
Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Turns 1 to 20 as a Takeda start Recommended build: Oda with Katana Samurai
Strategy
Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.
Key tips:
- You need both Realm Divide and Ashigaru and samurai unit tiers mastery.
- Katana Samurai makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
- See our combat guide for advanced techniques.
Satsuma Bosses
Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Turns 1 to 25 as a Shimazu start Recommended build: Oda with Katana Samurai
Strategy
Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.
Key tips:
- Make sure your build is fully optimized.
- Katana Samurai at max upgrade is recommended.
- Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.
Tosa Bosses
Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Turns 1 to 20 as a Chosokabe start Recommended build: Oda with Katana Samurai
Strategy
Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.
Key tips:
- Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
- Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
- These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.
General Boss Tips
- Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
- Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
- Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Katana Samurai trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
- Use Realm Divide: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
- Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
