Fatshark released Vermintide 2 on 8 March 2018 and it still runs on the same five heroes: Markus Kruber, Bardin Goreksson, Kerillian, Victor Saltzpyre and Sienna Fuegonasus. Each has four careers, three unlocked through levelling and one sold separately, which gives 20 loadouts built on one first person melee system. Difficulty climbs through Recruit, Veteran, Champion and Legend, with Cataclysm added by the Winds of Magic expansion in August 2019.
Combat in Warhammer: Vermintide 2 rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Temporary health from damage dealt
Most careers take a talent that converts damage into temporary health, triggered on kills, on cleaving several enemies at once or on critical hits. Temporary health drains steadily but it is the only healing available between medical supplies, which turns an incoming horde into a resource rather than a threat.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Stamina shields and push attacks
Blocking spends stamina shown as half circles above the crosshair, and a shield weapon carries several more of them than a two handed weapon does. Blocking and then pushing staggers everything in front of you and opens a free heavy attack, which is the standard answer to being surrounded.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Dodge count per weapon
Every weapon allows a fixed number of effective dodges in sequence before the dodge stops moving you far enough to matter. Dual daggers dodge further and more often than a two handed hammer, so chaining more dodges than a weapon supports walks you into the attack you were avoiding.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Tomes and grimoires as loot penalties
Each map holds three tomes and two grimoires. A tome occupies the healing item slot so you carry it instead of a medical kit, and each grimoire cuts every player's maximum health by 30 percent, stacking to 60 percent with both, in exchange for better end of mission loot.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Specials and monster spawns
Specials such as the Packmaster, Gutter Runner, Ratling Gunner, Warpfire Thrower and Blightstormer each disable or delete one player at a time, while monsters such as the Rat Ogre, Chaos Spawn, Stormfiend and Bile Troll soak the whole team. Calling them out by name matters more than personal damage, because a hooked teammate nobody noticed is how runs end.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Temporary health from damage dealt + Stamina shields and push attacks
Most careers take a talent that converts damage into temporary health, triggered on kills, on cleaving several enemies at once or on critical hits. When combined with Stamina shields and push attacks, blocking spends stamina shown as half circles above the crosshair, and a shield weapon carries several more of them than a two handed weapon does. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Dodge count per weapon + Tomes and grimoires as loot penalties
Every weapon allows a fixed number of effective dodges in sequence before the dodge stops moving you far enough to matter. Paired with Tomes and grimoires as loot penalties, each map holds three tomes and two grimoires. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Specials and monster spawns as a Multiplier
Specials such as the Packmaster, Gutter Runner, Ratling Gunner, Warpfire Thrower and Blightstormer each disable or delete one player at a time, while monsters such as the Rat Ogre, Chaos Spawn, Stormfiend and Bile Troll soak the whole team. Calling them out by name matters more than personal damage, because a hooked teammate nobody noticed is how runs end. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Specials and monster spawns optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
- Exploit Temporary health from damage dealt for maximum damage windows
- Chain Stamina shields and push attacks and Dodge count per weapon for combo damage
- Use Tomes and grimoires as loot penalties to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Block, push, then heavy attack is the core loop of the entire game. Pushing costs stamina but staggers everything in an arc in front of you, and the heavy attack that follows lands before anything recovers, which is how one player holds a corridor against a horde.
- Position using Temporary health from damage dealt to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Stamina shields and push attacks: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong weapons for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Righteous Stand but will get you killed in Skittergate.
