Saber Interactive's four-player co-op shooter runs on the Swarm Engine, which pours hundreds of zombies down stairwells and lets them climb over each other into living ramps. The Aftermath release of 21 September 2021 folded in first-person mode, the Vanguard class and two extra episodes set in Rome and Kamchatka. Eight classes, a three-tier weapon system and difficulty steps that run up through Extreme, Insane and Extinction sit on top of missions that take roughly 25 to 40 minutes each.

World War Z features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

New York: Starting Area

The opening episode, running through Manhattan streets, a subway and an apartment block toward a rooftop evacuation. Sightlines flip between long avenues and cramped stairwells, which makes it the best place to learn how pyramids form.

What to Do Here

Jerusalem: Early Game

Rooftops, market alleys and a long descent through the old city, with more open ground than New York offers. Zombies pour over low walls from several directions at once, so fortifications need to face outward rather than down one lane.

What to Do Here

Moscow: Mid Game

Snowbound streets, an underground metro section and a set of interior holds with very short sightlines. Shotguns and submachine guns outperform rifles here, and Screamers hidden in the metro tunnels punish sloppy pushes.

Tokyo: Late Game

Dense urban blocks and interiors where the horde reaches you from stairwells and windows simultaneously. Fire builds shine because the corridors are narrow enough that a single Molotov blocks an entire approach.

AttributeDetail
DifficultyRecommended class level 15 and up
Key RewardsExterminator and Slasher progression, vertical fights, Gasbag-heavy encounters
Recommended RoleGunslinger
Key WeaponsARK-103 Assault Rifle

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • ARK-103 Assault Rifle should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Special zombie roster mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Rome.

Rome: Endgame

Added with Aftermath, this episode ends in a last stand around Vatican City with some of the largest single swarms in the game. Ammunition management decides the run, which is why a Fixer is close to mandatory on the higher difficulties.

DifficultyRecommended class level 20 and up
Key RewardsAftermath-only progression, Vanguard shield practice, the largest defence phase in the campaign
Recommended RoleGunslinger
Key WeaponsARK-103 Assault Rifle

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Vanguard for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: New York → Jerusalem → Moscow → Tokyo → Rome. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
