Firaxis flipped the premise of the 2012 reboot. The aliens won, ADVENT runs Earth's cities as a friendly-looking police state, and XCOM is a guerrilla cell flying a captured alien supply barge called the Avenger. Most tactical missions open in concealment and run on a turn clock, so ambushes beat slow Overwatch creeping. Everything below covers the base game released in February 2016, with the August 2017 War of the Chosen expansion flagged wherever it changes the answer.
XCOM 2 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Guerrilla Ops | Squad of 4 to 6, from month 1 onward | Intel, Supplies, blocked Dark Events, sometimes an Engineer or Scientist | Grenadier |
| 2 | Retaliation missions | Squad of 5 to 6, month 2 onward | Region kept in contact, new recruits, occasionally a Resistance soldier | Grenadier |
| 3 | Supply Raids | Squad of 6, month 2 onward | Large Supplies payout, Alien Alloys, Elerium Crystals | Ranger |
| 4 | Alien Facility raids | Colonel-heavy squad of 6, month 3 onward | Avatar Project progress removed, Elerium Cores, alien corpses | Ranger |
| 5 | Avenger Defense | Every available soldier, triggered by story progress | Survival, salvage from the wrecked UFO | Ranger |
Guerrilla Ops: Starting Area
Three missions appear at once and you pick one. The two you skip each trigger a Dark Event. Objectives are usually a hack, a VIP grab or a device to destroy, and almost all of them carry a turn limit.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Squad of 4 to 6, from month 1 onward |
| Key Rewards | Intel, Supplies, blocked Dark Events, sometimes an Engineer or Scientist |
| Recommended Build | Grenadier |
| Key Equipment | Shotgun |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Concealment openers. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Retaliation missions.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Retaliation missions: Early Game
ADVENT hits a Resistance haven and Faceless hide among the crowd until they transform. The mission ends the instant every alien is dead, and everyone still standing at that moment is saved, so speed protects civilians better than caution does.

|---|---|
| Difficulty | Squad of 5 to 6, month 2 onward |
| Key Rewards | Region kept in contact, new recruits, occasionally a Resistance soldier |
| Recommended Build | Grenadier |
| Key Equipment | Shotgun |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Mission turn timers. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Shotgun if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Supply Raids.
Supply Raids: Mid Game
Convoy and train missions where you loot crates while ADVENT keeps dropping reinforcements. These are among the few untimed maps in the game, but the reinforcement flares never stop, so untimed does not mean relaxed.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Squad of 6, month 2 onward |
| Key Rewards | Large Supplies payout, Alien Alloys, Elerium Crystals |
| Recommended Build | Ranger |
| Key Equipment | Shotgun |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Assault Rifle becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Avatar Project doom bar for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Alien Facility raids: Late Game
The only way to pull filled blocks off the Avatar bar. You destroy the facility power source and extract. Garrisons here are heavy enough to punish an undergeared squad badly, so bring your best six.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Colonel-heavy squad of 6, month 3 onward |
| Key Rewards | Avatar Project progress removed, Elerium Cores, alien corpses |
| Recommended Build | Ranger |
| Key Equipment | Assault Rifle |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Assault Rifle should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Avenger facility rooms mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Avenger Defense.
Avenger Defense: Endgame
ADVENT finds your ship and you fight on your own hull with whoever is healthy. The objective is destroying the alien power source that keeps feeding reinforcements onto the deck. Lose here and the campaign ends outright.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Every available soldier, triggered by story progress |
| Key Rewards | Survival, salvage from the wrecked UFO |
| Recommended Build | Ranger |
| Key Equipment | Assault Rifle |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Psi Operative for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Guerrilla Ops → Retaliation missions → Supply Raids → Alien Facility raids → Avenger Defense. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
