See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Arabia)
The standard open-land competitive map where early aggression and map control decide most games.
Level/Difficulty: Any Key Rewards: Rewards strong micro, scouting, and timing pushes
What to Do in Arabia
- Learn age advancement. You progress through four ages by paying resources and meeting building requirements, unlocking stronger units, technologies, and upgrades. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Men-at-Arms Rush as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Keep your Town Center making villagers nonstop until you hit your economy cap.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Arbalester or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand age advancement fundamentals
- Men-at-Arms Rush selected and functional
- Arabia main content cleared
- Ready for Arena
Phase 2: Early Game (Arena)
A walled-start map that favors fast Castle booms and big late-game army clashes.
Level/Difficulty: Any Key Rewards: Boom-friendly, monk and siege play, late-game tech wars
What to Do in Arena
- Work on economy booming. Villagers gather food, wood, gold, and stone, and adding Town Centers to pump more villagers, called booming, snowballs your production. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Arbalester if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Scout the enemy base in the Dark and Feudal Age so you can react to their plan.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Black Forest.
- Consider whether Fast Castle Boom might suit your playstyle better than Men-at-Arms Rush.
Phase 2 Checklist
- economy booming integrated into gameplay
- Arbalester acquired
- Arena fully cleared
- Ready for Black Forest
Phase 3: Mid Game (Black Forest)
A heavily forested map with narrow chokes, ideal for turtling to a massive economy and Imperial deathball.
Level/Difficulty: Any Key Rewards: Safe booming, chokepoint defense, huge late armies
What to Do in Black Forest
- Master unit counter system. Every unit has hard counters: spearmen shred cavalry, skirmishers beat archers, and siege flattens infantry blobs. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Paladin. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Mix unit types and lean on counters, a pure single-unit army folds to its hard counter.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in civilization bonuses for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- unit counter system mastered
- Paladin acquired or in progress
- Black Forest fully cleared
- Ready for Islands
Phase 4: Late Game (Islands)
A water map where navy control and transport timing matter as much as the land game.
Level/Difficulty: Any Key Rewards: Galley and fire ship battles, water economy, amphibious attacks
What to Do in Islands
- Finalize your build. You should be running Fast Castle Boom or Men-at-Arms Rush with optimized gear.
- Paladin should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Wall your chokepoints on open maps to buy time for a Castle Age boom.
- map control and walling optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Nomad.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Paladin upgraded to max
- Islands fully cleared
- Ready for Nomad
Phase 5: Endgame (Nomad)
A scattered start with no initial Town Center, demanding fast scouting and placement decisions.
Level/Difficulty: Any Key Rewards: Diplomacy chaos, flexible builds, early scouting value
What to Do in Nomad
- Nomad tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Research economy upgrades like Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart on time, they pay for themselves.
- The endgame loop: run Nomad, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Tower Rush for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where map control and walling mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Nomad fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Letting villager production stop, which falls behind an opponent who never stops.
- Massing one unit type and losing the whole army to its counter.
- Floating huge unspent resources instead of investing in army or economy.
- Neglecting to scout and getting surprised by a rush or tower play.
- Forgetting economy upgrades, then wondering why your gather rate lags behind.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Keep your Town Center making villagers nonstop until you hit your economy cap.
- Scout the enemy base in the Dark and Feudal Age so you can react to their plan.
- Mix unit types and lean on counters, a pure single-unit army folds to its hard counter.
- Wall your chokepoints on open maps to buy time for a Castle Age boom.
- Research economy upgrades like Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart on time, they pay for themselves.
