Balatro Walkthrough: Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Balatro walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Researched and editorially reviewed. Updated .

Balatro looks like poker and plays like a slot machine you can actually beat. You build a deck, chain Joker effects, and chase score multipliers big enough to clear escalating blinds. One good run snowballs into numbers that break the screen, and the next loss sends you right back in.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Small Blind)

The opening hurdle of each Ante with the lowest score target, often safe to skip for a tag.

Level/Difficulty: Ante 1+ Key Rewards: Skip tags, easy clears, early gold

What to Do in Small Blind

  1. Learn Joker synergies. Up to five Jokers sit in your tray and trigger in left-to-right order, so placement changes the math. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick High Card Build as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Treat score as chips times mult, a run with huge chips and no mult stalls hard by Ante 5.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Mult Cards or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Joker synergies fundamentals
  • High Card Build selected and functional
  • Small Blind main content cleared
  • Ready for Big Blind

Phase 2: Early Game (Big Blind)

The middle blind with a higher target, the point where weak builds start to stall.

Level/Difficulty: Ante 1+ Key Rewards: Interest gold, build checkpoint

What to Do in Big Blind

  1. Work on poker hand scoring. Each played hand starts with base chips and a base mult tied to the hand type. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Mult Cards if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Buy Jokers that synergize with your chosen hand, a random strong Joker can be worse than a fitting cheap one.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to The Boss Blind.
  5. Consider whether Flush Build might suit your playstyle better than High Card Build.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • poker hand scoring integrated into gameplay
  • Mult Cards acquired
  • Big Blind fully cleared
  • Ready for The Boss Blind

Phase 3: Mid Game (The Boss Blind)

A blind with a disruptive rule, like disabling a suit or capping hand size, that tests your build's flexibility.

Level/Difficulty: Ante 1+ Key Rewards: Largest payout, run-defining challenge

What to Do in The Boss Blind

  1. Master chips and mult. Final score multiplies total chips by total mult. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Joker. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Pump Planet cards into the one hand you play most, leveling it lifts both halves of the score.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in deck modification for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • chips and mult mastered
  • Joker acquired or in progress
  • The Boss Blind fully cleared
  • Ready for The Shop

Phase 4: Late Game (The Shop)

The between-round store for Jokers, cards, vouchers, and rerolls, where your run actually takes shape.

Level/Difficulty: Any Key Rewards: Jokers, vouchers, consumables, rerolls

What to Do in The Shop

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Flush Build or High Card Build with optimized gear.
  2. Joker should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Keep at least 4 to 5 gold to earn interest, the economy snowball funds key rerolls.
  4. blind progression optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Endless Mode.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Joker upgraded to max
  • The Shop fully cleared
  • Ready for Endless Mode

Phase 5: Endgame (Endless Mode)

The post-win mode where blinds scale infinitely and the goal becomes the highest score you can survive.

Level/Difficulty: Post Ante 8 Key Rewards: Leaderboard scores, build stress test

What to Do in Endless Mode

  1. Endless Mode tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Skip a Small Blind for a useful tag when your build is already ahead of the curve.
  3. The endgame loop: run Endless Mode, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Steel Card Economy for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where blind progression mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Endless Mode fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Chasing big chips while ignoring mult, since the score is a product, not a sum.
  • Buying every Joker offered instead of the few that fit your build.
  • Leaving a bloated deck, which thins your odds of drawing the cards you need.
  • Spending all gold each shop and losing the interest snowball.
  • Ignoring Joker order, when reordering five Jokers can multiply the final number.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Treat score as chips times mult, a run with huge chips and no mult stalls hard by Ante 5.
  2. Buy Jokers that synergize with your chosen hand, a random strong Joker can be worse than a fitting cheap one.
  3. Pump Planet cards into the one hand you play most, leveling it lifts both halves of the score.
  4. Keep at least 4 to 5 gold to earn interest, the economy snowball funds key rerolls.
  5. Skip a Small Blind for a useful tag when your build is already ahead of the curve.
