Detailed Builds Analysis
Fighter (S-Tier)
Battle Master Fighter is arguably the strongest martial class with Superiority Dice adding damage and control to every attack. At level 5 you get Extra Attack, and Action Surge gives a second full action once per short rest — devastating with Great Weapon Master. Champion subclass is simpler but crits on 19-20.
Best with: Everburn Blade (Act 1), Balduran's Giantslayer (Act 3), Helldusk Armor Stat focus: Strength > Constitution > Dexterity
Wizard (A-Tier)
Wizards learn spells from scrolls, giving them the largest spell list of any class. Evocation subclass lets you cast Fireball without hitting allies (Sculpt Spells). At higher levels, spells like Haste, Counterspell, and Wall of Fire dominate encounters. Fragile but devastating.
Best with: Markoheshkir (Act 3), Robe of the Weave, Spellcrux Amulet Stat focus: Intelligence > Constitution > Dexterity
Cleric (S-Tier)
Light Cleric deals strong AoE damage while wearing medium armor and a shield. Life Cleric is the best healer in the game. Tempest Cleric can max-damage a Lightning Bolt once per short rest with Destructive Wrath. All Cleric subclasses get heavy armor or shield proficiency.
Best with: The Blood of Lathander (Act 1), Viconia's Walking Fortress (Act 3), Helm of Balduran Stat focus: Wisdom > Constitution > Strength
Rogue (A-Tier)
Rogues deal massive single-target damage with Sneak Attack (once per turn, needs advantage or an ally adjacent to the target). Thief subclass gets a second Bonus Action, enabling dual-wielding attacks or item usage. Assassin gets guaranteed crits on surprised enemies in the first round.
Best with: Crimson Mischief, Bloodthirst, Shadow of Menzoberranzan Stat focus: Dexterity > Constitution > Wisdom
Paladin (S-Tier)
Paladins combine martial prowess with Divine Smite — spending spell slots to add 2d8-5d8 radiant damage to any melee hit. Oath of Vengeance gets Vow of Enmity for guaranteed advantage. With Great Weapon Master and a crit-fishing build, Smite crits deal 40+ damage. Also gets Aura of Protection at level 6.
Best with: Sword of Justice (Act 1), The Sacred Star (Act 3), Helldusk Armor Stat focus: Strength > Charisma > Constitution

Equipment Analysis
Gontr Mansen: A legendary greatsword found in Act 3 that deals extra psychic damage and has the unique ability to see the memories of creatures you kill. It has a built-in action that deals bonus damage based on your missing hit points. One of the highest DPR weapons for two-handed builds.
Markoheshkir: The best staff in the game, found in the Ramazith's Tower vault in Act 3. It grants a free spell slot once per long rest and the Kereska's Favour ability which lets you choose an elemental damage type to boost all your spells. Essential for any spellcaster build.
Bloodthirst: A legendary dagger found in Act 3 that makes your attacks always eligible for Sneak Attack regardless of positioning. Combined with Crimson Mischief in the off-hand, it creates the strongest dual-wield setup. Deals additional piercing damage on every hit.
Nyrulna: A legendary trident obtained from the circus in Rivington during Act 3. It returns when thrown like a boomerang and deals bonus thunder damage in an AoE on impact. It also prevents you from being moved against your will. Excellent for thrown weapon Tavern Brawler builds.
Crimson Mischief: A legendary shortsword from the same loot pool as Bloodthirst in Act 3. It deals extra piercing damage when you have advantage and bonus damage when your target is below 50% health. The perfect off-hand for any dual-wielding Rogue or Ranger.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Baldur's Gate 3 centers on turn-based combat and D&D 5e ruleset. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one.
What's strong right now:
- Fighter with Gontr Mansen is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- companion approval builds are gaining ground as players find new synergies.
- Cleric remains essential for learning hard content.
What's underrated:
- Wizard is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Bloodthirst offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Paladin builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
