Harebrained Schemes and Paradox released BATTLETECH on 24 April 2018. It is turn-based lance combat set in 3025, in a Periphery region called the Aurigan Reach, where you run a mercenary company for High Lady Kamea Arano against Director Santiago Espinosa's Aurigan Directorate. Four mechs drop per mission, five initiative phases resolve per round, and the MechLab makes you argue for every half ton. Three expansions followed: Flashpoint in 2018, Urban Warfare in 2019 and Heavy Metal later that year.

Boss fights are where BATTLETECH tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Coromodir Bosses

Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Prologue at half a skull, finale at 5 skulls Recommended build: Medium Mech skirmisher with PPC

Strategy

The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Each round runs through five numbered phases, with the higher numbers resolving first. This is your primary tool here.

Key tips:

  • Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
  • Use Five phase initiative order to create safe windows.
  • PPC is enough to handle everything here.

Weldry Bosses

Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Around 3 skulls, expect heavy mech opposition Recommended build: Medium Mech skirmisher with PPC

Strategy

Early game bosses test your understanding of Evasion pips and Sensor Lock. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.

Key tips:

  • Evasion pips and Sensor Lock is critical for these fights.
  • Farm PPC upgrades if you're struggling.
  • Consider switching to Medium Mech skirmisher if your current setup isn't working.

Panzyr Bosses

Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Around 3 and a half skulls Recommended build: Light Mech scout with AC/20 Autocannon

Strategy

Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.

Key tips:

  • You need both Five phase initiative order and Called shots on prone and shutdown targets mastery.
  • AC/20 Autocannon makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
  • See our combat guide for advanced techniques.

Smithon Bosses

Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Around 4 skulls, assault mechs present Recommended build: Light Mech scout with AC/20 Autocannon

Strategy

Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.

Key tips:

  • Make sure your build is fully optimized.
  • AC/20 Autocannon at max upgrade is recommended.
  • Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.

The Argo Bosses

Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Available from early campaign onward, permanent for the rest of the run Recommended build: Light Mech scout with AC/20 Autocannon

Strategy

Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.

Key tips:

  • Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
  • Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
  • These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.

General Boss Tips

  1. Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
  2. Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
  3. Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded AC/20 Autocannon trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
  4. Use Five phase initiative order: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
  5. Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
