Infinity Ward shipped Modern Warfare II on 28 October 2022 as the sequel to the 2019 reboot, and it was the first Call of Duty to launch on Steam since 2017. It rebuilt loadouts around Gunsmith 2.0 weapon platforms and perk packages that unlock during a match rather than at spawn. Multiplayer launched with ten 6v6 Core maps plus a set of larger Battle Maps for 32v32 Ground War.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best characters, weapons worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Gunsmith 2.0 weapon platforms
Weapons are grouped into platforms of up to five receivers that share one attachment pool, so levelling the M4 also unlocks parts for the FSS Hurricane and 556 Icarus. Each loadout is limited to five attachments rather than the ten of earlier titles.
Perk packages
You build a package of two Base Perks, one Bonus Perk and one Ultimate Perk instead of picking three slots. Base Perks are active from spawn while the Bonus and Ultimate unlock as the match progresses, which changes how a class plays between the opening and closing minutes.
Weapon tuning
Once an attachment is fully levelled you can tune it along two sliders, trading aim down sight speed against recoil steadiness or range against handling. The gains are small individually and stack into a noticeable difference across five attachments.
Advanced movement set
Mantling, ledge hanging, dolphin diving, swimming and door interactions all return or debut here, and tactical sprint recharges more slowly than in 2019. Slide cancelling was deliberately removed, which slows the pace compared to Modern Warfare 2019.
Field upgrades and killstreaks
Field upgrades such as Dead Silence, Trophy System and DDoS charge on a timer, while killstreaks including the UAV, Precision Airstrike and Chopper Gunner cost consecutive kills. Choosing low cost streaks keeps pressure on the map; expensive streaks reward players who can string six or more kills.

Weapons Guide
| Weapon | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| M4 | The starting assault rifle and the entry point to the largest weapon platform in the game, sharing attachments with the FSS Hurricane, 556 Icarus and FTAC Recon. | New players and anyone who wants one class that works on every map size. |
| Lachmann Sub | A submachine gun modelled on the MP5 with fast handling and a manageable recoil pattern. | Objective modes on Core maps such as Breenbergh Hotel, Farm 18 and Mercado Las Almas. |
| TAQ-56 | A hard hitting assault rifle in the SCAR family, trading fire rate for damage per bullet. | Longer sightlines on Taraq, Al Bagra Fortress and Ground War Battle Maps. |
| Fennec 45 | The fastest firing gun in the game, based on the Vector, with a stock magazine that empties in about a second. | Room clearing, holding a Hardpoint, and pushing chokepoints where fights start under ten metres. |
| Victus XMR | A . | Static long range angles and Ground War, where sightlines run far past assault rifle range. |
M4: The starting assault rifle and the entry point to the largest weapon platform in the game, sharing attachments with the FSS Hurricane, 556 Icarus and FTAC Recon. Its recoil pattern is close to vertical, which makes it easy to learn.
Lachmann Sub: A submachine gun modelled on the MP5 with fast handling and a manageable recoil pattern. It kills quickly indoors while still holding its own at the ranges where most SMGs fall apart.
TAQ-56: A hard hitting assault rifle in the SCAR family, trading fire rate for damage per bullet. Fewer shots to kill means it rewards accurate first bursts rather than sustained spray.
Fennec 45: The fastest firing gun in the game, based on the Vector, with a stock magazine that empties in about a second. Extended mags are effectively mandatory rather than optional.
Victus XMR: A .50 calibre bolt action sniper with the highest damage in its class and correspondingly heavy handling. Built for velocity it removes most bullet drop from typical multiplayer distances.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Farm 18 | 6v6 Core, small | Fast weapon levelling, camo grinding |
| Breenbergh Hotel | 6v6 Core, medium | Balanced SMG and rifle practice, flanking routes |
| Mercado Las Almas | 6v6 Core, small to medium | Close range weapon levelling, objective practice |
| Taraq | 6v6 Core, large | Long range weapon levelling, sniper practice |
| Al Bagra Fortress | 6v6 Core and Ground War | Killstreak farming, vertical angle practice |
Farm 18: A compact shoot house style training facility with three parallel lanes and heavy indoor fighting. Spawns flip constantly, which rewards short weapons and punishes anyone camping a single room.
Breenbergh Hotel: A three lane hotel with an open central plaza and a maze of interior corridors, lifts and stairwells. The plaza looks like the main route but the interior flanks decide most rounds.
Mercado Las Almas: A night market packed with stalls, awnings and short sightlines, split by a raised walkway. Verticality is the trap here, since the walkway is watched from more angles than it seems.
Taraq: A desert village of open courtyards and long lines of sight with buildings along each flank. Assault rifles and marksman rifles dominate the centre while SMGs are forced to the edges.
Al Bagra Fortress: A coastal fortress that plays as a 6v6 Core map and also appears in Ground War rotation. Its high stone walls create firing positions that overlook the courtyard from multiple tiers.
See our maps & locations guide for detailed area breakdowns and our walkthrough for the optimal progression path.
Tips That Actually Matter
- Level the M4 before anything else. It unlocks the FSS Hurricane, 556 Icarus and FTAC Recon along with a shared attachment pool, so hours spent on one gun pay out across four weapons and two weapon classes.
- Do not tune an attachment until it is fully levelled, because tuning sliders only appear at max attachment rank. Tuning early wastes matches you could spend levelling toward the next tier of parts.
- Perk packages change your class mid match. Build around the fact that Ghost or Survivor arrives late, and treat the opening four minutes as a window where you are visible to enemy UAVs no matter what.
- Dolphin diving is a repositioning tool, not a duel winner. Dive backwards behind cover after taking damage rather than diving forward into a room, since the recovery animation leaves you helpless for close to a second.
- Low cost killstreaks win more matches than high cost ones. A UAV at four kills feeds the whole team information, while a Chopper Gunner at eight is often earned once per match and cancelled by the first enemy launcher.
- Tactical sprint recharges slowly in this game compared with Modern Warfare 2019. Save it for crossing open ground rather than burning it inside buildings where you will need it to escape.
- On Farm 18 and Mercado Las Almas the spawns flip roughly every time a team pushes past the map centre. Recognising the flip lets you turn around and catch enemies arriving behind you instead of pushing into their fresh spawn.
- Extended magazines matter more on the Fennec 45 than any other weapon in the game. The stock magazine empties in about a second of held trigger, which is not enough for a second target.
- Ground War Battle Maps such as Sa'id and Sariff Bay reward vehicles and launchers far more than 6v6 does. Carry an RPG-7 or JOKR in your secondary if you queue Ground War regularly.
- Weapon tuning gains are individually tiny, roughly a few percent per slider, but five tuned attachments compound. Prioritise aim down sight speed on SMGs and recoil steadiness on rifles rather than spreading the changes evenly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spreading weapon XP across many guns instead of finishing one platform first.
- Equipping five attachments without checking the cumulative aim down sight speed penalty.
- Playing the opening minutes as if Ghost were already active.
- Running the Fennec 45 on Taraq or other large maps where its range falls apart.
- Picking eight kill streaks on small maps where you rarely survive that long.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many maps shipped at launch?
Ten 6v6 Core maps including Farm 18, Breenbergh Hotel, Mercado Las Almas, Taraq, Crown Raceway, Embassy, Zarqwa Hydroelectric, Santa Sena Border Crossing and Al Bagra Fortress, plus larger Battle Maps such as Sa'id and Sariff Bay for Ground War.
What is a weapon platform?
A family of up to five receivers that share one attachment pool. Levelling any weapon on the platform unlocks parts usable by every other weapon in it, and platforms can cross weapon classes.
Why do my perks change during a match?
Perk packages give two Base Perks from spawn, then unlock a Bonus Perk and finally an Ultimate Perk as match time and score accumulate. That is by design, not a bug.
Is DMZ part of Modern Warfare II?
DMZ is an extraction mode tied to Warzone 2.0 that launched alongside Modern Warfare II in Season 01, playing across Al Mazrah with later additions including Building 21, Ashika Island and Vondel.
Can I still play the campaign offline?
The campaign is single player and covers Task Force 141 operations with Price, Soap, Ghost and Gaz. It requires the game to be installed and signed in on Steam, but does not need other players.
