Caves of Qud Tier List — Current Rankings

Caves of Qud tier list ranking every build and equipment option. Updated rankings with detailed reasoning.

This Caves of Qud tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.

Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Detailed Builds Analysis

True Kin (A-Tier)

Pure human with cybernetic augmentations. Start with higher base stats and equipment quality but no mutations. True Kin are more consistent and forgiving — you know exactly what your character can do. The Praetorian caste provides the best combat stats.

Best with: Starting equipment based on caste, cybernetic implants (night vision, dermal plating) Stat focus: Strength (melee), Agility (ranged), Toughness (survival), Intelligence (tinkering)

Mutant (S-Tier)

Random mutations create unique characters every run. The best mutations (Teleportation, Multiple Arms, Precognition) make Mutant significantly stronger than True Kin. The worst mutations can be run-ending. Mutant is the high-variance, high-ceiling option.

Best with: Mutation-dependent, basic starting equipment Stat focus: Ego (for mental mutations), physical stats for physical mutations

Esper (S-Tier)

A Mutant specializing in mental mutations like Teleportation, Domination (mind control), Sunder Mind, and Precognition. The most powerful build archetype when mental mutations synergize. Ego stat increases mental mutation effectiveness.

Best with: Ego-boosting equipment, mental mutations (Teleportation, Domination, Precognition) Stat focus: Ego (primary), Willpower (mental defense), Toughness (survival)

Melee Build (A-Tier)

Focuses on physical mutations (Multiple Arms, Carapace, Horns) and melee weapon mastery. Strength-stacking with a vibro weapon or carbide longsword creates devastating melee damage. Multiple Arms lets you wield shields and weapons simultaneously.

Best with: Vibro Blade or Carbide Longsword, Shield, Carapace mutation, Multiple Arms Stat focus: Strength, Toughness, Agility (dodge)

Ranged Build (A-Tier)

Uses rifles, pistols, or laser weapons with Agility-based builds. Ranged builds keep enemies at distance, avoiding the dangerous melee that kills most characters. The Laser Rifle with overclocked cells deals massive damage per shot.

Best with: Laser Rifle or Carbine, ammunition stockpile, night vision Stat focus: Agility, Toughness, Intelligence (for tinkering ammo)

Equipment Analysis

Vibro Blade: An energy-vibrating blade that penetrates armor with guaranteed percentage-based damage. Even heavily armored enemies take full vibro damage. The most reliable melee weapon for endgame content where enemy armor values become extreme. Powered by cells.

Laser Rifle: An energy weapon firing precise laser beams with no bullet drop. Uses energy cells for ammunition. The highest single-shot damage of any ranged weapon. Overclocked cells increase damage further but risk overheating. The endgame ranged weapon.

Flamethrower: A devastating AoE weapon that sets entire rooms on fire. Everything burns — enemies, furniture, and you if you're not fire-resistant. The Flamethrower trivializes dense enemy groups but is suicidal in enclosed spaces without fire immunity mutation.

Stun Rod: A melee weapon that stuns enemies on hit, preventing them from acting for 1-2 turns. Low damage but the stun effect lets you lock down dangerous enemies while your companions or other abilities finish them. Found in Grit Gate.

Carbide Longsword: The highest base damage mundane melee weapon. Carbide weapons combine hardness with sharpness. The longsword's reach and damage make it the standard by which other melee weapons are measured. Found in mid-game ruins and vendor inventory.

Meta Analysis

The current meta in Caves of Qud centers on mutation system and cybernetics. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one.

What's strong right now:

  • True Kin with Vibro Blade is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
  • procedural world builds are gaining ground as players find new synergies.
  • Esper remains essential for learning hard content.

What's underrated:

  • Mutant is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
  • Flamethrower offers excellent performance for its investment level.

What's overhyped:

  • Pure Ranged Build builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
