Caves of Qud is a science-fantasy roguelike set in a far-future Earth where jungles have overtaken the ruins of advanced civilizations, and mutations grant extraordinary powers. The game's depth is staggering — a procedurally generated world with persistent factions, thousands of items, and a mutation system that creates wildly different playthroughs. You can play as a True Kin (pure human with cybernetic augments) or a Mutant (random mutations ranging from multiple arms to teleportation). The faction reputation system means your choices have consequences — befriending the ape cult means the robot faction might hunt you. Caves of Qud 1.0 released in 2025 after over a decade of development, adding a complete main story while preserving the open-ended sandbox that made it legendary.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Joppa
The starting village in the salt marsh. The village elder, Mehmet, and other NPCs provide the opening quests. Joppa's merchants sell basic supplies and the water ritual tutorial teaches the faction system. Your home base for early game.
Level/Difficulty: Level 1-5 Key Rewards: Starting quests, faction tutorial, basic supplies, Argyve's quest line
What to Do in Joppa
- Learn mutation system. Mutant characters start with chosen mutations (physical like Multiple Arms, Carapace; mental like Teleportation, Precognition) plus random mutations gained every few levels. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Mutant as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
- Water is everything. Carry at least 16 drams at all times. Water is currency, hydration, cooking ingredient, and trading commodity. Never waste water.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Laser Rifle or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand mutation system fundamentals
- Mutant selected and functional
- Joppa main content cleared
- Ready for Red Rock
Phase 2: Early Game — Red Rock
The first dungeon, an abandoned cave complex with bandits and basic loot. The quest to explore Red Rock is one of the first objectives. Moderate danger with predictable enemies. Contains the Warden's corpse and lore about the area.
Level/Difficulty: Level 3-8 Key Rewards: First dungeon experience, Warden's loot, basic exploration challenge
What to Do in Red Rock
- Work on cybernetics. True Kin characters use cybernetic implants instead of mutations. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Laser Rifle if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- The water ritual (share water with an NPC) is the primary way to gain faction reputation and learn secrets. Perform water rituals with every neutral or friendly NPC you meet.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Bethesda Susa.
- Consider whether True Kin might suit your playstyle better than Mutant.
Phase 2 Checklist
- cybernetics integrated into gameplay
- Laser Rifle acquired
- Red Rock fully cleared
- Ready for Bethesda Susa
Phase 3: Mid Game — Bethesda Susa
A massive underground complex and one of the game's major dungeons. Multiple levels with increasingly dangerous enemies, locked sections, and environmental hazards (acid pools, temperature extremes). Contains some of the best equipment.
Level/Difficulty: Level 15-25 Key Rewards: High-tier equipment, major story progression, challenging combat
What to Do in Bethesda Susa
- Master procedural world. The overworld map and dungeon interiors are procedurally generated, but key locations (Joppa, Grit Gate, Bethesda Susa) always exist. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Vibro Blade. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Precognition (mental mutation) lets you preview what happens if you take an action, then rewind if the result is bad. This turns risky decisions into informed ones. The best defensive mutation in the game.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in faction reputation for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- procedural world mastered
- Vibro Blade acquired or in progress
- Bethesda Susa fully cleared
- Ready for Grit Gate
Phase 4: Late Game — Grit Gate
The Barathrumites' underground city and a major faction hub. Grit Gate has the best merchants, a recoiler (teleporter home), and quest lines that advance the main story. Befriending the Barathrumites provides essential late-game resources.
Level/Difficulty: Level 10-15 Key Rewards: Best merchants, recoiler, Barathrumite faction, tinkering access
What to Do in Grit Gate
- Finalize your build. You should be running True Kin or Mutant with optimized gear.
- Vibro Blade should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Proselytize (Ego-based skill) converts powerful NPCs into permanent followers. Proselytizing a legendary creature or powerful NPC gives you an extremely dangerous companion. Target high-level NPCs for maximum impact.
- water economy optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Golgotha.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Vibro Blade upgraded to max
- Grit Gate fully cleared
- Ready for Golgotha
Phase 5: Endgame — Golgotha
A massive trash heap dungeon that's one of the most notorious challenges in the game. Filled with acid, sludge, oozes, and the powerful Slog (a massive ooze boss). Many runs end in Golgotha. Bring acid resistance and plenty of water.
Level/Difficulty: Level 12-20 Key Rewards: Story quest item, extreme challenge, acid-themed loot
What to Do in Golgotha
- Golgotha tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- True Kin start stronger but Mutant has a higher ceiling. If you want consistency, play True Kin. If you want crazy runs with teleportation, fire breath, and extra limbs, play Mutant.
- The endgame loop: run Golgotha, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Ranged Build for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where water economy mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Golgotha fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Wasting water by drinking when not dehydrated. Water is currency — only drink when the hydration warning appears. Carry extra for trading and water rituals, not excessive drinking.
- Attacking neutral NPCs or factions without considering the reputation consequences. Killing one merchant can make an entire faction permanently hostile across the entire world.
- Ignoring mutations that seem weak. Many mutations have non-obvious synergies — Flaming Hands seems bad until combined with fire immunity, then it becomes free AoE damage with no self-harm.
- Exploring deep dungeons without an escape plan. Teleportation mutation or a recoiler (teleport home device) is essential for getting out of dangerous situations. Without one, getting trapped in a deep dungeon means death.
- Hoarding good equipment instead of using it. Permadeath means that hoarded equipment is lost when you die. Use your best gear — it doesn't help sitting in a stash if you die in combat.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression

- The water ritual (share water with an NPC) is the primary way to gain faction reputation and learn secrets. Perform water rituals with every neutral or friendly NPC you meet.

- Proselytize (Ego-based skill) converts powerful NPCs into permanent followers. Proselytizing a legendary creature or powerful NPC gives you an extremely dangerous companion. Target high-level NPCs for maximum impact.
- True Kin start stronger but Mutant has a higher ceiling. If you want consistency, play True Kin. If you want crazy runs with teleportation, fire breath, and extra limbs, play Mutant.
