This Crusader Kings II tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy Infantry | The centre of a retinue, paired with pikemen rather than doubled up. | The anchor of most melee lines and one of the units that came out of the Horse Lords rebalance near the top. |
| Pikemen | Any army expecting to meet knights or horse archers on open ground. | The consistent answer to cavalry and the one heavy unit that was reliable across every patch, provided your commanders have the traits that trigger the pike tactics. |
| Light Cavalry | Turning a won battle into a destroyed army rather than a retreating one. | Cheap, fast, and devastating in pursuit. |
| Archers | One or two skirmisher slots in a mixed retinue, never as the bulk of an army. | Skirmishers that soften the enemy before the melee phase. |
| Retinues | Any ruler whose vassals dislike him, which after fifty years is every ruler. | Standing troops maintained from your demesne income that ignore vassal opinion entirely. |

Equipment Analysis
Heavy Infantry: The anchor of most melee lines and one of the units that came out of the Horse Lords rebalance near the top. Expensive per unit, and the reason a small retinue can hold a flank against a much larger levy.
Pikemen: The consistent answer to cavalry and the one heavy unit that was reliable across every patch, provided your commanders have the traits that trigger the pike tactics.
Light Cavalry: Cheap, fast, and devastating in pursuit. Light cavalry contributes little to a stand-up fight and enormously to the casualties inflicted after the enemy breaks and runs.
Archers: Skirmishers that soften the enemy before the melee phase. They were reduced in effectiveness after Horse Lords, so a modern retinue usually takes fewer of them than older guides suggest.
Retinues: Standing troops maintained from your demesne income that ignore vassal opinion entirely. The general rule is two skirmisher types and two melee types, because most tactics buff a pair of unit types and penalise everything else in the stack.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Crusader Kings II centers on Succession laws and gavelkind and Levies and retinues. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- Feudal with Heavy Infantry is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- Plots and factions builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
- Nomadic remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- Tribal is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Light Cavalry offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Iqta builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
Quick Picks by Situation
