Darkest Dungeon Classes & Characters — Complete Guide

Every Darkest Dungeon build and class explained. Strengths, weaknesses, best gear, and which to pick for your playstyle.

Darkest Dungeon is a gothic roguelike that punishes overconfidence and rewards careful resource management. Your heroes explore procedurally generated dungeons while accumulating stress from combat, darkness, and eldritch horrors. At 100 stress, heroes develop Afflictions — becoming selfish, paranoid, masochistic, or abusive — sabotaging your party from within. The art style (Mike Mignola-inspired comic panels) and Wayne June's legendary narration create an atmosphere unmatched in gaming. Death is permanent, heroes are expendable, and the Darkest Dungeon itself requires sending heroes to their likely doom. The Crimson Court DLC adds a vampire faction, and Color of Madness adds an endless mode.

Choosing the right build shapes your entire experience. This guide breaks down every option — what they're good at, what they struggle with, and which one matches your playstyle. For optimized builds with full gear sets, see our builds guide.

Vestal

The Vestal is the only reliable full-party healer. Divine Grace heals a single target for massive HP, while Divine Comfort heals the entire party. She's nearly mandatory for Long dungeon runs. Her damage is mediocre but her healing is irreplaceable. Equip her with healing trinkets (Junia's Head + Sacred Scroll) for maximum heal output.

Which Build Should You Pick?

For Beginners

Highwayman is the clear winner. It's forgiving, teaches core mechanics, and remains competitive into endgame. Follow our beginner's guide for the best first-session experience.

For Maximum Performance

Vestal is the top pick once you understand the game's mechanics. Pair it with Ancestor's Pen for the strongest overall setup.

For a Challenge

Hellion offers the highest skill ceiling. It's punishing when misplayed but incredibly rewarding when mastered. Only recommended after you've completed the game with another build.

For Group Play

Plague Doctor shines in cooperative content with utility and team support capabilities.
