Darkest Dungeon is a gothic roguelike that punishes overconfidence and rewards careful resource management. Your heroes explore procedurally generated dungeons while accumulating stress from combat, darkness, and eldritch horrors. At 100 stress, heroes develop Afflictions — becoming selfish, paranoid, masochistic, or abusive — sabotaging your party from within. The art style (Mike Mignola-inspired comic panels) and Wayne June's legendary narration create an atmosphere unmatched in gaming. Death is permanent, heroes are expendable, and the Darkest Dungeon itself requires sending heroes to their likely doom. The Crimson Court DLC adds a vampire faction, and Color of Madness adds an endless mode.
Darkest Dungeon features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order — what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order

| 5 | Darkest Dungeon | Champion (level 5-6 heroes only) | Game completion, Ancestral trinkets, story resolution | Vestal |
Ruins — Starting Area
Undead-themed dungeon with skeletons, cultists, and bone courtiers. Holy damage and blight are effective here. The Ruins are generally the easiest dungeon type with predictable enemy compositions. Crusader and Vestal excel due to anti-undead bonuses.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Apprentice to Champion |
| Key Rewards | Ancestral trinkets, heirlooms (Busts, Portraits), quest rewards |
| Recommended Build | Highwayman |
| Key Equipment | Dismas' Head |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of stress system — this is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Weald.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Weald — Early Game
Forest dungeon with fungal creatures, brigands, and giant enemies. Bleed is effective against most Weald enemies. The Weald has the most diverse enemy types, requiring adaptable party compositions. The Hag boss is one of the most difficult mid-game encounters.

|---|---|
| Difficulty | Apprentice to Champion |
| Key Rewards | Ancestral trinkets, heirlooms (Deeds), boss trinkets |
| Recommended Build | Highwayman |
| Key Equipment | Dismas' Head |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering trinket management — it's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Dismas' Head if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Warrens.
Warrens — Mid Game
Underground pig-man tunnels with swine enemies that deal heavy stress and blight. Bleed damage destroys most Warrens enemies efficiently. The corridors are tight and enemy compositions hit hard. The Flesh boss fills all four enemy ranks with one massive creature.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Apprentice to Champion |
| Key Rewards | Ancestral trinkets, heirlooms (Crests), Flesh's Heart trophy |
| Recommended Build | Vestal |
| Key Equipment | Dismas' Head |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Ancestor's Pen becomes accessible here — prioritize getting it.
- Master quirk system for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Cove — Late Game
Eldritch ocean caverns with fish-men, crabs, and Lovecraftian horrors. Blight damage is king here — most Cove enemies have high bleed resistance but low blight resistance. The Plague Doctor is essential. The Cove enemies deal heavy stress damage.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Apprentice to Champion |
| Key Rewards | Ancestral trinkets, heirlooms, eldritch boss trophies |
| Recommended Build | Vestal |
| Key Equipment | Ancestor's Pen |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Ancestor's Pen should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- affliction and virtue mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Darkest Dungeon.
Darkest Dungeon — Endgame
The final dungeon requiring four separate expeditions, each harder than the last. Heroes who complete a DD quest refuse to return (except with specific trinkets). You must send different heroes on each run. The final quest is the most difficult content in the base game.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Champion (level 5-6 heroes only) |
| Key Rewards | Game completion, Ancestral trinkets, story resolution |
| Recommended Build | Vestal |
| Key Equipment | Ancestor's Pen |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Hellion for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order — Ruins → Weald → Warrens → Cove → Darkest Dungeon. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner — Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment — Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough — Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush — Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
