Kojima Productions and 505 Games brought the Director's Cut to PC on 30 March 2022, adding the Buddy Bot, the Maser Gun, the Cargo Catapult, support skeletons, a firing range and the Ruined Factory missions on top of the 2019 original. You are Sam Porter Bridges, hauling cargo across a broken United Cities of America and switching each facility onto the Chiral Network one delivery at a time. Weight distribution, terrain reading and route planning carry more of the game than shooting does, which is still the most argued about design decision of its year.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

Weight and balance

Cargo stacks on Sam's back with a real centre of gravity, and the two shoulder triggers brace him left or right when a slope or a river current starts to tip the load. Going past the carry limit turns every loose rock into a fall that scatters containers, and damaged containers lower the delivery grade even when the cargo inside survives.

BT encounters and Timefall

Timefall rain ages whatever it lands on, and it brings out BTs, which the Odradek scanner on Sam's shoulder detects by unfolding and clicking faster as they close. Getting grabbed drags Sam into a tar pit fight, and losing there sets off a voidout that leaves a permanent crater in the world.

Chiral Network connection

Every facility has to be linked to the Chiral Network before its terrain, its blueprints and other players' structures appear in your game. Connection is graded to five stars per location, and pushing a facility to five stars unlocks the better gear that facility manufactures.

Social Strand structures

Bridges, ladders, climbing anchors, generators and roads built by other players appear in your world asynchronously, and yours appear in theirs. Likes are the only currency exchanged, nobody can enter your session, and no player can attack another, which is the whole point of the design.

Portable Chiral Constructor building

The PCC spends chiral bandwidth to print a watchtower, postbox, timefall shelter, generator or bridge on the spot. The Level 2 constructor adds zip lines, safe houses and the Director's Cut Cargo Catapult, and a chain of zip lines across the mountains is the single biggest time saver in the game.

Heavy Hauler (A-Tier): For the large orders and the road building material runs that need hundreds of kilograms moved at once. Power skeletons and floating carriers turn what looks like an impossible load into a slow but stable walk.

Equipment Guide

EquipmentWhy It MattersBest For
Odradek ScannerThe shoulder mounted scanner is the most used tool in the game.Route planning before every delivery and locating BTs in Timefall while crouched and holding breath.
Bola GunA non lethal restraint launcher that ties up MULEs and terrorists without killing them.Clearing MULE camps to steal their cargo and vehicles without triggering a crater.
Blood GrenadeGrenades filled with Sam's own blood, which is one of the few things that harms BTs.BT territory crossings and the tar pit boss fights where hematic damage is the only thing that works.
Portable Chiral ConstructorNot a weapon but the most important piece of equipment Sam carries.Building zip lines, generators and postboxes that turn a hostile route into a commuting lane.
Maser GunA Director's Cut addition that fires an electric shock to stun human enemies, unlocked after clearing Order 77 at the K2 West Distribution Center.Early game MULE encounters before the Bola Gun and stun grenades are properly stocked.

Odradek Scanner: The shoulder mounted scanner is the most used tool in the game. A ground scan colours terrain by how safely Sam can cross it, and near BTs the arms unfold and point, with the clicking rate telling you how close the threat is.

Bola Gun: A non lethal restraint launcher that ties up MULEs and terrorists without killing them. Since corpses cause voidouts if left alone, non lethal tools are the practical default rather than a moral option.

Blood Grenade: Grenades filled with Sam's own blood, which is one of the few things that harms BTs. Throwing them drains his blood gauge, so cryptobiotes and blood bags are part of the ammunition supply chain.

Portable Chiral Constructor: Not a weapon but the most important piece of equipment Sam carries. It converts chiral bandwidth into permanent structures, and every one you place also appears in other players' worlds.

Maser Gun: A Director's Cut addition that fires an electric shock to stun human enemies, unlocked after clearing Order 77 at the K2 West Distribution Center. It arrives early enough to change how the first MULE camps play.

Location Progression

LocationLevel RangeKey Rewards
Capital Knot CityEpisodes 1 to 2, Eastern regionThe first cargo orders, the Bridges suit, the initial Chiral Network link
Port Knot CityEpisode 2, Eastern regionStory progression west, the BB pod arc, first large scale BT confrontation
Lake Knot CityEpisode 3, Central regionCentral region Chiral Network access, vehicle blueprints, the road building network start
South Knot CityEpisode 3 onward, Central regionMajor story beats, dense BT crossings, high value standard orders
Mountain Knot CityEpisodes 5 to 6, mountain regionAll terrain skeleton, the mountain prepper chain, the best zip line anchor points in the game

Capital Knot City: The eastern hub and the base Bridges actually operates from after Central Knot City is lost. It sets the pattern for every knot: an incinerator, a private room, a terminal with standard orders, and a five star connection to grind toward.

Port Knot City: A harbour city reached across water rather than land, and the point where the eastern chapter closes and the map opens up properly. The delivery there involves the game's first real BT set piece.

Lake Knot City: The first central region city and the practical start of the open middle of the game. From here the map fans out to the Wind Farm, the Distribution Center and the long chain of preppers who supply the best blueprints.

South Knot City: A southern city surrounded by BT heavy ground and MULE territory, which makes the approach harder than the delivery. It is also where the story turns from logistics toward the people running the network.

Mountain Knot City: The highest and most punishing knot, sitting past snowfields where vehicles are useless and Timefall never really stops. It is the region that justifies building a zip line network instead of walking.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Scan the ground with the Odradek before every departure. The colour coding shows which slopes Sam can descend without falling, and reading it properly saves more time than any piece of gear.
  2. Boots are consumable. Carry at least two spare pairs on long routes, check durability at every rest, and stash extras in postboxes you built along your regular paths.
  3. Cargo goes on the back in the order you set. Putting the fragile and the heaviest containers low and centred keeps the balance manageable, and the auto arrange option at a terminal does this better than manual stacking.
  4. Cryptobiotes restore blood, and blood is ammunition for every hematic weapon and grenade. Eat them on sight rather than saving them, since the blood gauge also drains from injuries and Timefall.
  5. Never leave a corpse. A dead MULE or terrorist has to be carried to an incinerator, because a body left alone becomes a BT and then a voidout crater that permanently scars the map.
  6. Build postboxes in the gaps between facilities rather than beside them. Facilities already have terminals, so a postbox is only useful where you would otherwise have nowhere to drop cargo or swap boots.
  7. Roads are worth the material investment. Auto pavers need large amounts of ceramics, metals and chiral crystals, but a completed road turns a fifteen minute walk into a two minute drive, and other players contribute materials too.
  8. Hold both shoulder triggers when crossing rivers. Current strength scales with depth, and the moment Sam's balance meter tips past the halfway mark, releasing one trigger will drop the whole load downstream.
  9. The Cargo Catapult from the Director's Cut solves cliffs. Firing cargo to a landing zone and climbing unburdened is faster and safer than trying to carry a full load up a rock face.
  10. Use other players' structures and like them. Likes cost you nothing, keep useful structures from decaying out of the shared world, and returning lost cargo to its owner's facility gives materials back to the network.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating this as a shooter and killing MULEs, which produces bodies that have to be hauled to an incinerator or they cause a voidout crater in that exact spot.
  • Overloading past the carry limit on the assumption that slower is fine, when a single fall on a rock field damages containers and drops the delivery grade below three stars.
  • Building structures immediately next to a facility where the terminal already covers everything, wasting chiral bandwidth that a mid route generator or zip line would use better.
  • Ignoring the Buddy Bot and support skeleton added in the Director's Cut, then repeating the original game's early grind on foot with no carry assistance.
  • Sprinting through BT territory instead of crouching and holding breath, which alerts them, triggers a tar grab and turns a two minute crossing into a boss fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Director's Cut add over the original Death Stranding?

The Buddy Bot, the Maser Gun, the Cargo Catapult, support skeletons, a stabilizer, jump ramps, a firing range, a racetrack with time trials and the Ruined Factory mission chain, plus performance options for PC. Save data from the original does not carry over between the two Steam apps.

Do I need to play the original before the Director's Cut?

No. The Director's Cut contains the full 2019 campaign with the additions folded in, so it is the version to start with. The only reason to own the original is an existing save you do not want to abandon.

How do I deal with BTs early on?

Crouch, hold breath and move slowly while watching the Odradek arms. Before you have hematic weapons the correct answer is avoidance, and once blood grenades and hematic rounds are unlocked they become fights you can choose to take.

Is Death Stranding multiplayer?

It is asynchronous only. Structures, roads, signs and lost cargo cross between worlds once an area is on the Chiral Network, but no player enters your session and no player can attack you. Likes are the only exchange.

What is the fastest way to travel long distances?

Zip lines built with the Level 2 Portable Chiral Constructor, chained across high ground so their range links up. Roads built with auto pavers are faster on flat terrain, but zip lines are the only thing that ignores mountains entirely.
