Kojima Productions and 505 Games brought the Director's Cut to PC on 30 March 2022, adding the Buddy Bot, the Maser Gun, the Cargo Catapult, support skeletons, a firing range and the Ruined Factory missions on top of the 2019 original. You are Sam Porter Bridges, hauling cargo across a broken United Cities of America and switching each facility onto the Chiral Network one delivery at a time. Weight distribution, terrain reading and route planning carry more of the game than shooting does, which is still the most argued about design decision of its year.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

How to Play Heavy Hauler
Move slowly, brace on every slope, and follow roads or player built bridges even when the detour looks long, because one fall with 400 kg on your back undoes an hour of work.
For the large orders and the road building material runs that need hundreds of kilograms moved at once. Power skeletons and floating carriers turn what looks like an impossible load into a slow but stable walk.
Why this build works: Pair Bola Gun with BT encounters and Timefall and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. Core gear like Power skeleton, two floating carriers, reverse trike for the flat sections, cargo repair spray pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.

Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Scan the ground with the Odradek before every departure. The colour coding shows which slopes Sam can descend without falling, and reading it properly saves more time than any piece of gear.
- Boots are consumable. Carry at least two spare pairs on long routes, check durability at every rest, and stash extras in postboxes you built along your regular paths.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
