Capcom shipped Devil May Cry 5 on 8 March 2019 on the RE Engine, eleven years after Devil May Cry 4. The campaign is a prologue plus 20 missions that rotate between three playable characters: Nero with the Red Queen and single-use Devil Breaker arms, the physically useless summoner V, and Dante with four switchable styles and six Devil Arms. Vergil came to the PC version as a separate 4.99 dollar character on 15 December 2020, playable in story missions, the Void and Bloody Palace.

Boss fights are where Devil May Cry 5 tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Mission 2: Qliphoth Bosses

Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Early campaign, Human to Devil Hunter Recommended role: V with Gerbera

Strategy

The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. The meter climbs from Dismal through Crazy, Blast, Alright, Sweet, Savage and Smokin Sexy Style as you land varied attacks, and it drops if you repeat one move or take a hit. This is your primary tool here.

Key tips:

  • Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
  • Use Style rank from D to SSS to create safe windows.
  • Gerbera is enough to handle everything here.

Mission 8: Demon King Bosses

Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Mid campaign, all difficulties Recommended role: V with Gerbera

Strategy

Early game bosses test your understanding of Nero's Exceed and Devil Breakers. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.

Key tips:

  • Nero's Exceed and Devil Breakers is critical for these fights.
  • Farm Gerbera upgrades if you're struggling.
  • Consider switching to V if your current setup isn't working.

Mission 11: Reason Bosses

Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Mid campaign, Devil Hunter and above Recommended role: Nero with Red Queen

Strategy

Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.

Key tips:

  • You need both Style rank from D to SSS and Dante's four switchable styles mastery.
  • Red Queen makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
  • See our combat guide for advanced techniques.

Mission 13: Three Warriors Bosses

Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Late campaign, any difficulty Recommended role: Nero with Red Queen

Strategy

Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.

Key tips:

  • Make sure your build is fully optimized.
  • Red Queen at max upgrade is recommended.
  • Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.

Bloody Palace Bosses

Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Post-campaign, 101 floors Recommended role: Nero with Red Queen

Strategy

Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.

Key tips:

  • Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
  • Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
  • These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.

General Boss Tips

  1. Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
  2. Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
  3. Upgrade your weapons: A max-upgraded Red Queen trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
  4. Use Style rank from D to SSS: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
  5. Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
