Capcom shipped Devil May Cry 5 on 8 March 2019 on the RE Engine, eleven years after Devil May Cry 4. The campaign is a prologue plus 20 missions that rotate between three playable characters: Nero with the Red Queen and single-use Devil Breaker arms, the physically useless summoner V, and Dante with four switchable styles and six Devil Arms. Vergil came to the PC version as a separate 4.99 dollar character on 15 December 2020, playable in story missions, the Void and Bloody Palace.
Devil May Cry 5 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mission 2: Qliphoth | Early campaign, Human to Devil Hunter | Goliath kill, early Red Orb income, first Blue Orb fragments | V |
| 2 | Mission 8: Demon King | Mid campaign, all difficulties | Alternate cutscene for winning, Urizen attack pattern practice | V |
| 3 | Mission 11: Reason | Mid campaign, Devil Hunter and above | Cavaliere Angelo kill, strong Red Orb payout at high style rank | Nero |
| 4 | Mission 13: Three Warriors | Late campaign, any difficulty | Free character choice, repeatable Red Orb farming | Nero |
| 5 | Bloody Palace | Post-campaign, 101 floors | Completion trophies, the real test of a character's move set | Nero |
Mission 2: Qliphoth: Starting Area
Nero's first real mission inside the demon tree's roots, ending in the Goliath fight. It is where Exceed timing has to click, because Goliath's charge punishes anyone still mashing the attack button.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Early campaign, Human to Devil Hunter |
| Key Rewards | Goliath kill, early Red Orb income, first Blue Orb fragments |
| Recommended Role | V |
| Key Weapons | Gerbera |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Style rank from D to SSS. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first weapons upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Mission 8: Demon King.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Mission 8: Demon King: Early Game
The second Urizen encounter as Nero, and one the game expects you to lose. Losing here continues the story rather than ending the run, but beating it is possible and unlocks a separate cutscene branch.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid campaign, all difficulties |
| Key Rewards | Alternate cutscene for winning, Urizen attack pattern practice |
| Recommended Role | V |
| Key Weapons | Gerbera |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Nero's Exceed and Devil Breakers. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Gerbera if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Mission 11: Reason.
Mission 11: Reason: Mid Game
Dante against Cavaliere Angelo, the armoured knight that Trish is trapped inside. The fight is a clean test of Royalguard because the knight telegraphs a small number of very heavy attacks.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid campaign, Devil Hunter and above |
| Key Rewards | Cavaliere Angelo kill, strong Red Orb payout at high style rank |
| Recommended Role | Nero |
| Key Weapons | Gerbera |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Red Queen becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Dante's four switchable styles for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Mission 13: Three Warriors: Late Game
The one mission where the game lets you pick which of the characters to play, which makes it the standard farming stop for anyone grinding a specific character's skill tree.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Late campaign, any difficulty |
| Key Rewards | Free character choice, repeatable Red Orb farming |
| Recommended Role | Nero |
| Key Weapons | Red Queen |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Red Queen should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Devil Trigger and Sin Devil Trigger mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Bloody Palace.
Bloody Palace: Endgame
A 101-floor survival tower added free on 1 April 2019, played with Nero, V or Dante, and with Vergil once the DLC is installed. There is a per-floor timer and clearing floors quickly is the only way to keep the clock alive to the top.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Post-campaign, 101 floors |
| Key Rewards | Completion trophies, the real test of a character's move set |
| Recommended Role | Nero |
| Key Weapons | Red Queen |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Dante's four combat styles for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Mission 2: Qliphoth → Mission 8: Demon King → Mission 11: Reason → Mission 13: Three Warriors → Bloody Palace. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
