Divinity: Original Sin 2 Classes & Characters — Complete Guide

Every Divinity: Original Sin 2 build and class explained. Strengths, weaknesses, best gear, and which to pick for your playstyle.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is widely considered one of the greatest CRPGs ever made, blending deep tactical turn-based combat with systemic environmental interactions and genuine narrative freedom. The surface combo system lets you set oil on fire, electrify water, freeze blood pools, and chain elemental reactions in creative ways the developers never intended. With 4-player co-op campaign support and a GM mode for creating custom adventures, DOS2 offers hundreds of hours of content. The Definitive Edition added a full Act 3 rework, improved tutorials, and thousands of new voice lines.

Choosing the right build shapes your entire experience. This guide breaks down every option — what they're good at, what they struggle with, and which one matches your playstyle. For optimized builds with full gear sets, see our builds guide.

Lone Wolf

The Lone Wolf talent doubles your attribute points, combat ability points, and vitality when running with 2 or fewer party members. Two Lone Wolf characters are significantly stronger than a full party of 4. A Lone Wolf melee fighter hits like a truck and has massive armor pools. The talent also doubles civil ability investment.

Necromancer

Necromancers deal physical damage with magic, bypassing the split-damage problem. Skills like Grasp of the Starved, Blood Storm, and Totems of the Necromancer deal physical damage scaled by Intelligence. Living Armor talent heals your Magic Armor whenever you heal from Necromancer lifesteal. It's the strongest magic damage build because it targets the typically lower Physical Armor.

Summoner

At Summoning 10, the Incarnate becomes a champion-level summon that matches or exceeds most party members in power. The Incarnate inherits elemental properties from the surface it's summoned on — summoned in fire becomes a fire champion, in blood becomes a blood champion. The Summoner can then buff the Incarnate with Power Infusion and Farsight Infusion.

Which Build Should You Pick?

For Beginners

Necromancer is the clear winner. It's forgiving, teaches core mechanics, and remains competitive into endgame. Follow our beginner's guide for the best first-session experience.

For Maximum Performance

Lone Wolf is the top pick once you understand the game's mechanics. Pair it with Anathema for the strongest overall setup.

For a Challenge

Ranger offers the highest skill ceiling. It's punishing when misplayed but incredibly rewarding when mastered. Only recommended after you've completed the game with another build.

For Group Play

Summoner shines in cooperative content with utility and team support capabilities.
