Don't Starve is Klei Entertainment's single player wilderness survival roguelike, where Wilson is dumped into a hand drawn nightmare by the demon Maxwell and told to work it out. You juggle health, hunger and sanity, build a Science Machine, learn which biomes hold reeds and gold, and hope you have a Log Suit before Deerclops arrives in winter. Unlike Don't Starve Together, it runs solo, it has permadeath with no ghost to resurrect you, and it has Adventure Mode, the five chapter gauntlet that eventually unlocks Maxwell as a playable character.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Health hunger and sanity
Three meters run at once. Hunger drains constantly and drags health down when it empties, and sanity falls in the dark, near monsters and after eating spoiled food. Low sanity spawns shadow creatures that can actually kill you.
Season cycle
The default world gives you twenty days of mild weather before winter arrives on day 21 and lasts around fifteen days. Winter freezes crops, kills plant growth and brings Deerclops, so days one to twenty are a countdown, not a sandbox.
Science and Alchemy tech tiers
The Science Machine costs one Gold Nugget, four Logs and four Rocks and unlocks the first crafting tier. The Alchemy Engine takes two Gold Nuggets, four Boards and six Cut Stone and opens the rest, including the Log Suit chain and better tools.
Crock Pot cooking
The Crock Pot needs three Cut Stone, six Charcoal and six Twigs, and takes four ingredient slots. Meatballs, one meat with three filler items, restore 62.5 hunger and are the standard early recipe because the filler can be almost anything.
Adventure Mode
Maxwell's Door drops you into a separate five chapter campaign with its own rules and worlds. Wes is freed inside it and Maxwell himself becomes playable once you finish it, which is content Don't Starve Together does not have.

Equipment Guide
| Equipment | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Spear | 34 damage over 150 uses from two Twigs, one Rope and one Flint. | Everything from day one until you have a Ham Bat or a Tentacle Spike |
| Ham Bat | One Pig Skin, two Twigs and two Meat for a weapon that starts near 59. | Planned boss fights where you can craft it fresh the same day |
| Tentacle Spike | 51 damage over 100 uses, and it cannot be crafted. | The best sustained weapon before you have Nightmare Fuel |
| Dark Sword | 68 damage over 100 uses from five Nightmare Fuel and one Living Log, at the cost of 20 sanity per minute while it is in your hand. | Boss fights, provided you have a sanity source such as cooked Green Caps or a Tam o' Shanter |
| Boomerang | 27. | Hitting birds, Tallbirds and anything you would rather not stand next to |
Spear: 34 damage over 150 uses from two Twigs, one Rope and one Flint. The weakest dedicated weapon in the base game and also the one you will craft first and most often.
Ham Bat: One Pig Skin, two Twigs and two Meat for a weapon that starts near 59.5 damage and falls toward 29.75 as it spoils, so it is strongest the day you make it.
Tentacle Spike: 51 damage over 100 uses, and it cannot be crafted. It only drops from Tentacles in the Marsh, which is why experienced players farm that biome early.
Dark Sword: 68 damage over 100 uses from five Nightmare Fuel and one Living Log, at the cost of 20 sanity per minute while it is in your hand.
Boomerang: 27.2 damage over 10 throws from one Boards, one Silk and one Charcoal. It returns to you and hits you if you fail to catch it.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Grasslands | Day 1 to 10 | Cut Grass, berries, rabbits, Beefalo Wool |
| Forest | Day 1 to 20 | Logs, Pine Cones, Treeguard Living Logs |
| Marsh | Day 5 onward | Cut Reeds, Tentacle Spike, Tentacle Spots |
| Rockyland | Day 2 onward | Gold Nuggets, Rocks, Flint, Nitre, Tallbird Eggs |
| Ancient Ruins | Day 40 onward | Thulecite, Nightmare Fuel, Ancient Pseudoscience Station recipes |
Grasslands: Grass tufts, berry bushes, rabbit holes and usually a Beefalo herd. The standard first base site because it supplies food, filler for the Crock Pot and rope material.
Forest: Dense evergreens for logs and pine cones, and the biome where chopping carelessly wakes a Treeguard. Plant a pine cone in front of one and it will calm down instead of killing you.
Marsh: Reeds for Papyrus and Blow Darts, plus Tentacles that drop the 51 damage Tentacle Spike. Dangerous to walk through and worth the risk anyway.
Rockyland: Boulders holding Rocks, Gold Nuggets, Flint and Nitre, plus Tallbirds guarding their nests. Everything on the Science Machine and Alchemy Engine recipes comes from here.
Ancient Ruins: Beneath the caves, guarded by the Ancient Guardian and full of Thulecite, Nightmare Fuel and the Ancient Pseudoscience Station. The endgame destination and the source of Dark Sword materials.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Build the Science Machine on the first day from one Gold Nugget, four Logs and four Rocks, because almost every survival craft is locked behind it.
- Treat days one to twenty as winter preparation, since winter arrives on day 21 and freezes the food supply for around fifteen days.
- Craft a Log Suit before your first real fight. Wearing armour is the difference between a bad trade and a dead save file, and there is no ghost to revive you here.
- Farm Tentacles in the Marsh once you have armour, because the 51 damage Tentacle Spike over 100 uses beats anything you can craft at that stage.
- Make the Ham Bat the same day you plan to use it, since its damage decays from 59.5 down toward 29.75 as it spoils.
- Carry a light source at all times. Darkness attacks after a short warning, and it kills quickly regardless of how much health you have.
- Keep sanity above the shadow creature threshold by cooking Green Caps, picking flowers or wearing a top hat, because shadow creatures do real damage.
- Cook Meatballs in the Crock Pot with one meat and three filler items for 62.5 hunger, since almost any berry or vegetable works as filler.
- Craft Blow Darts from two Cut Reeds, one Hound's Tooth and one Azure Feather for a single 100 damage hit, and save them for opening a boss fight.
- Plant a Pine Cone directly in front of an angry Treeguard to pacify it rather than fighting a monster you woke up by accident.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Fighting Deerclops or a Spider Queen without a Log Suit, which turns a survivable encounter into a dead world.
- Ignoring sanity until shadow creatures appear, at which point you are fighting monsters and your own meters at the same time.
- Crafting a Ham Bat days before you need it and swinging a spoiled 29. 75 damage weapon at a boss.
- Spending the first twenty days exploring instead of building a base, then meeting winter on day 21 with no food, no warmth and no armour.
- Chopping a whole forest without carrying Pine Cones, then dying to the Treeguard that wakes up from it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Don't Starve and Don't Starve Together?
This entry is the original single player game. It has permadeath with no ghost resurrection, and it has Adventure Mode with Maxwell's Door. Don't Starve Together is the standalone multiplayer version, which adds co-op, ghost revival, its own bosses such as Klaus and the Ancient Fuelweaver, and characters like Wortox and Wurt that never existed here.
Which character should I start as?
Wilson. He has 150 health, 150 hunger and 200 sanity with no penalties, and his beard gives free winter insulation and Beard Hair for a Meat Effigy.
How do I unlock Maxwell?
Finish Adventure Mode, the five chapter campaign entered through Maxwell's Door. Wes is freed along the way inside the same campaign.
What is the best weapon in the base game?
The Dark Sword at 68 damage over 100 uses, made from five Nightmare Fuel and one Living Log. It drains 20 sanity per minute, so bring a sanity source. Before Nightmare Fuel, the Tentacle Spike at 51 damage is the practical answer.
How do I survive my first winter?
By day 20 you want a Crock Pot, dried meat or a full larder, a Thermal Stone, warm clothing and a Log Suit. Winter starts on day 21, plants stop growing, and Deerclops turns up to flatten whatever you built.
