Doom Eternal Combat Guide — Master Every Mechanic

Doom Eternal combat guide covering every mechanic, advanced techniques, and the strategies that separate good players from great ones.

Doom Eternal is the most aggressive FPS ever designed. The combat loop forces constant movement and resource management: chainsaw fodder enemies for ammo, glory kill staggered enemies for health, flame belch for armor pickups. Standing still means death. The weapon switching system rewards rapid swapping between the Super Shotgun and Ballista for maximum DPS, creating a rhythm-action feel to combat encounters. Every demon has a specific counter-strategy and exploitable weak point. The Slayer Gates offer optional ultra-hard encounters, and the two DLC campaigns (Ancient Gods 1 & 2) are considered even better than the base game.

Combat in Doom Eternal rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works — and how they interact — is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. glory kills

Staggered enemies (flashing blue/orange) can be glory killed with a melee finisher that drops health pickups. Glory kills have generous range and brief invulnerability during the animation. They're not optional — glory kills are your primary health recovery. The game is designed around maintaining health through aggressive glory kill chains.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. chainsaw ammo

The chainsaw instantly kills fodder demons (Imps, Soldiers, Gargoyles) and drops a shower of ammunition. One fuel pip regenerates automatically, ensuring you always have ammo access. The chainsaw is your ammo button — use it whenever ammo runs low, targeting the nearest fodder enemy.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. weapon switching

Doom Eternal is designed around rapid weapon switching, not reloading. Each weapon has a specific purpose: Super Shotgun for close-range burst, Ballista for long-range precision, Rocket Launcher for splash damage. The optimal playstyle chains weapons in quick succession without pausing.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. dash mechanic

Two dash charges with a short cooldown. Dashes provide brief invulnerability and rapid repositioning. Save at least one dash charge at all times for emergencies. Dashes are essential for dodging Marauder attacks, escaping corners, and maintaining combat spacing.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Slayer Gates

Six optional combat arenas locked behind Slayer Keys found in main levels. Each Gate features the hardest enemy waves in the game. Completing all six unlocks the Unmaykr weapon. Slayer Gates test mastery of every weapon, mod, and movement technique.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

Mechanic Synergies

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

glory kills + chainsaw ammo

Staggered enemies (flashing blue/orange) can be glory killed with a melee finisher that drops health pickups. When combined with chainsaw ammo, the chainsaw instantly kills fodder demons (imps, soldiers, gargoyles) and drops a shower of ammunition. This combination is the core of every effective build.

weapon switching + dash mechanic

Doom Eternal is designed around rapid weapon switching, not reloading. Paired with dash mechanic, two dash charges with a short cooldown. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Slayer Gates as a Multiplier

Six optional combat arenas locked behind Slayer Keys found in main levels. Each Gate features the hardest enemy waves in the game. Completing all six unlocks the Unmaykr weapon. Slayer Gates test mastery of every weapon, mod, and movement technique. This system amplifies everything else — the better your Slayer Gates optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Combat by Role

Each role approaches combat differently:

Super Shotgun Main (S-Tier)

Combat approach: Meathook to an enemy, blast with SSG at point blank, quick-swap to Ballista for a follow-up shot, repeat. Use Flame Belch during Meathook approach for armor drops. Key weapons: Super Shotgun Primary mechanic: glory kills

The Super Shotgun with Meathook (grapple toward enemies) is the game's best weapon. Full setup in our builds guide.

Ballista Swapper (S-Tier)

Combat approach: Open with Ballista Arbalest for burst damage, swap to SSG for close-range follow-up, swap back to Ballista for the second charged shot while SSG reloads. Key weapons: Ballista Primary mechanic: chainsaw ammo

The Ballista deals high single-target damage at any range. Full setup in our builds guide.

Rocket Spam (A-Tier)

Combat approach: Lock-On to priority targets (Whiplash, Dread Knight), fire three homing rockets, then chainsaw a fodder enemy for ammo replenishment. Key weapons: Rocket Launcher Primary mechanic: weapon switching

The Rocket Launcher with Lock-On mod fires three homing rockets that deal massive damage. Full setup in our builds guide.

BFG Saver (A-Tier)

Combat approach: Use standard weapons for 95% of combat. Save BFG for specific overwhelming encounters — multiple Tyrants, Slayer Gate final waves, or near-death emergencies. Key weapons: BFG 9000 Primary mechanic: dash mechanic

The BFG 9000 has extremely limited ammo (roughly 2-3 shots per level) but each shot clears nearly everything on screen. Full setup in our builds guide.

Micro Missiles (A-Tier)

Combat approach: Use Precision Bolt to snipe weak points (disabling enemy attacks), switch to Micro Missiles for burst damage, and SSG for close range. Key weapons: Chaingun Primary mechanic: Slayer Gates

The Heavy Cannon's Micro Missiles mod fires a barrage of small rockets that stagger enemies. Full setup in our builds guide.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
  2. Exploit glory kills for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain chainsaw ammo and weapon switching for combo damage
  4. Use dash mechanic to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. The resource loop is: Chainsaw for AMMO, Glory Kill for HEALTH, Flame Belch for ARMOR. Never neglect any of the three — they keep you alive. Memorize this triangle.
  3. Position using glory kills to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness — Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression — One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation — Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing — Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring chainsaw ammo — This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong weapons for the situation — Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths — Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting — Trading hits works in Hell on Earth but will get you killed in Final Sin.
