Dota 2 Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Dota 2 walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Dota 2 is Valve's flagship free-to-play MOBA with 120+ heroes, each with unique abilities and playstyles. Unlike simpler MOBAs, Dota 2 features mechanics like denying your own creeps, courier management, destructible trees, and day/night vision cycles. The game's complexity ceiling is virtually limitless — after thousands of hours, players still discover new item interactions and ability combos. Regular patches from IceFrog keep the meta shifting, and The International tournament offers the largest prize pool in esports history.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Radiant Base

Radiant's base sits in the bottom-left corner with natural jungle proximity advantages. The Radiant triangle is one of the safest farming areas in the game. Radiant has historically had a slight win rate advantage due to Roshan pit accessibility.

Level/Difficulty: All game Key Rewards: Safe farming triangle, natural Roshan approach

What to Do in Radiant Base

  1. Learn last hitting. Last hitting means dealing the killing blow to an enemy creep to earn gold (around 35-45 gold per melee creep). Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Mid as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Last hit every creep you can — even 1 missed creep per wave means losing 200+ gold per minute, which adds up to an entire major item over 30 minutes.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Blink Dagger or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand last hitting fundamentals
  • Mid selected and functional
  • Radiant Base main content cleared
  • Ready for Dire Base

Phase 2: Early Game — Dire Base

Dire occupies the top-right corner. Dire's advantage lies in easier Roshan access from their offlane and a more defensible high ground with better tower angles. The Dire jungle allows carries to farm between lane waves efficiently.

Level/Difficulty: All game Key Rewards: Aggressive Roshan control, strong high ground defense

What to Do in Dire Base

  1. Work on item builds. Dota 2's item system features 200+ items with active abilities that fundamentally change how heroes play. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Blink Dagger if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Buy and place Observer Wards as support — they're free and a single ward preventing a gank saves your carry 300+ gold in death time and lost farm.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Roshan Pit.
  5. Consider whether Carry might suit your playstyle better than Mid.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • item builds integrated into gameplay
  • Blink Dagger acquired
  • Dire Base fully cleared
  • Ready for Roshan Pit

Phase 3: Mid Game — Roshan Pit

Roshan spawns in a pit on the river. He has 6,000 base HP, 20 armor, and uses Slam and Bash abilities. Killing Roshan drops the Aegis of the Immortal. Second kill also drops Cheese (instant 2,500 HP heal). Contesting Roshan often decides close games.

Level/Difficulty: First attempt usually at 20-30 minutes Key Rewards: Aegis of the Immortal, Cheese (2nd kill), Refresher Shard (3rd kill)

What to Do in Roshan Pit

  1. Master team fights. 5v5 team fights decide most games and revolve around ability cooldowns, positioning, and target priority. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Black King Bar. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Smoke of Deceit (50 gold) enables surprise ganks that win games. Coordinate with 3-4 heroes and gank the enemy mid or carry. Use 1-2 smokes every 10 minutes.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in ward placement for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • team fights mastered
  • Black King Bar acquired or in progress
  • Roshan Pit fully cleared
  • Ready for Secret Shop

Phase 4: Late Game — Secret Shop

Two Secret Shops sell components for major items (Eaglesong, Reaver, Mystic Staff) not available at the base shop. Located in each team's jungle, they require physically walking there or using a courier.

Level/Difficulty: When buying major items (15+ minutes) Key Rewards: Components for Butterfly, Heart of Tarrasque, Scythe of Vyse

What to Do in Secret Shop

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Carry or Mid with optimized gear.
  2. Black King Bar should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. BKB timing is critical — buy it too late and you die in every fight. For carries and mids, BKB should come after your first core item, usually around 20-25 minutes.
  4. Roshan timing optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Outpost.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Black King Bar upgraded to max
  • Secret Shop fully cleared
  • Ready for Outpost

Phase 5: Endgame — Outpost

Two Outposts provide bonus XP every 10 minutes to the controlling team and serve as TP scroll destinations. Teams channel for 6 seconds to capture them. Controlling both gives significant XP advantage over time.

Level/Difficulty: After minute 10 Key Rewards: Bonus XP every 10 minutes, teleport destinations

What to Do in Outpost

  1. Outpost tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Control Roshan timer by noting the exact kill time. Having your team at the pit when Roshan respawns guarantees the Aegis for high-ground pushes.
  3. The endgame loop: run Outpost, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Hard Support for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Roshan timing mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Outpost fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Auto-attacking the creep wave instead of last-hitting — pushing the wave exposes you to ganks and denies farm from your own carry.
  • Not buying BKB on carries — new players prioritize pure damage items, then get stunlocked and killed in every team fight.
  • Ignoring Roshan after winning a team fight — killing 3+ enemies gives a free Roshan kill and Aegis, which many players waste.
  • Hoarding gold instead of buying items — dying with 3,000+ unreliable gold means losing 30% of it. Convert gold to items immediately.
  • Not carrying a TP scroll at all times — being unable to defend a tower or save a teammate is the most common mistake below 3,000 MMR.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Last hit every creep you can — even 1 missed creep per wave means losing 200+ gold per minute, which adds up to an entire major item over 30 minutes.
  2. Buy and place Observer Wards as support — they're free and a single ward preventing a gank saves your carry 300+ gold in death time and lost farm.
  3. Smoke of Deceit (50 gold) enables surprise ganks that win games. Coordinate with 3-4 heroes and gank the enemy mid or carry. Use 1-2 smokes every 10 minutes.
  4. BKB timing is critical — buy it too late and you die in every fight. For carries and mids, BKB should come after your first core item, usually around 20-25 minutes.
  5. Control Roshan timer by noting the exact kill time. Having your team at the pit when Roshan respawns guarantees the Aegis for high-ground pushes.
