Koei Tecmo's Omega Force team released DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS on 16 January 2025, dropping the huge playable roster for one nameless protagonist the game calls the Wanderer and later names Ziluan, a member of the Guardians of Peace. He can pick up all 10 weapon types, from Sword through Podao to Halberd, and carries two of them into any battle. The campaign runs five chapters from the Yellow Turban Rebellion through Sishui Gate, Hulao Gate, Xiapi and Guandu to Chibi, and the faction you commit to in Chapter 3 decides which battles you fight and which ending you get.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Why this role works: General's Sword does the damage and Bravery and Battle Arts keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Spear
Spear is a strong option in DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Dragon Spear | A Spear whose thrust reaches past the first rank of a shield line and whose sweeps knock pikemen off their feet. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Parrying and perfect evasion | An officer's attack can be blocked, parried, evaded or perfect evaded. |
How to Play Spear
Spear focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair Dragon Spear with Parrying and perfect evasion and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Gauntlets
Gauntlets is a strong option in DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Fists of Divine Flux | High grade Gauntlets with the shortest reach and the highest damage per second against a single target in the game. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Grand Tactics and army morale | Both armies periodically commit to a Grand Tactic, an army wide move such as a fire attack or a cavalry charge that either damages the opposing force heavily or hands it a large morale swing. |
How to Play Gauntlets
Gauntlets focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Grand Tactics and army morale covers the gap Fists of Divine Flux leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Podao
Podao is a specialized option in DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Crushing Falchion | The entry Podao, a slow two handed blade that cuts an arc through a full line of soldiers. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Ten weapon types on two slots | Sword, Spear, Gauntlets, Wheels, Podao, Staff, Twin Pikes, Lance, Crescent Blade and Halberd all handle differently, and you carry two at a time and swap between them freely. |
How to Play Podao
Podao focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Ten weapon types on two slots rather than raw numbers, and Crushing Falchion is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Halberd
Halberd is a specialized option in DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Sky Piercer | The starting Halberd, derived from Lu Bu's style, with wide sweeping arts that interrupt officers mid attack. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Companion bonds and ally calls | Fighting near an officer you share a bond with draws a blue line between the two of you, which signals that you have their attention and can pull them into your fight. |
How to Play Halberd
Halberd focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Sky Piercer and Companion bonds and ally calls pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Spear: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Sword once you understand core mechanics and have access to General's Sword
- Keep a Gauntlets setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Halberd for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Bravery is the whole combat system. You start with 4 points and the rank cap takes it to 10, and a single parry counter refills a full unit, so treat parrying as a resource generator rather than a defensive option.
- Attacks that flash red cannot be parried under any circumstances. Learn the two or three officers who use them heavily and default to perfect evasion in those duels instead of trying to time a block.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
