Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive released the 1.0 version of Escape the Backrooms on 23 October 2025, published by Secret Mode after several years in Early Access. One to four players no-clip through more than 30 levels built on backrooms creepypasta lore, and every member of the team has to reach the exit alive for the escape to count. Proximity voice chat carries the whole experience, because entities hear you as clearly as your friends do.

Starting Escape the Backrooms can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.

What Kind of Game Is This?

Escape the Backrooms is a horror game built around One to four player co-op with proximity voice and Sanity and consumables. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.

What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.

Choosing Your First Build

Our recommendation: Start with Scout. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.

Avoid Puzzle Runner as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.

First Session Step-by-Step

Step 1: Learn One to four player co-op with proximity voice

Voice volume falls off with distance, so a teammate two rooms away is genuinely hard to hear. Entities react to that same audio, which turns shouting for directions into a real risk rather than a convenience.

This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how One to four player co-op with proximity voice works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.

Step 2: Head to The Lobby

Level 0, the yellow wallpaper maze with humming fluorescent lights that everyone knows from the original creepypasta. Find the locked door first, then turn 90 degrees right from it and follow the long wall to the alcove where the key sits, collecting ladder pieces on the way.

Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.

Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade

Look for Almond Water: it's the most accessible early upgrade. The strongest sanity restore in the game at 50 percent, against 25 percent for every other food item. Carry it for the dark stretches rather than drinking it the moment you find it.

Step 4: Understand Sanity and consumables

Sanity drains in darkness and isolation, and food restores it. Almond Water is the only item that restores 50 percent, while every other food item restores 25 percent, so carrying one bottle for the bad stretch is worth more than four snacks.

This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.

Step 5: Push to Electrical Station

Level 3, reached via a Hub exit, and the level that introduces the Hound. Nine fuses are needed, three from each of three sections, and a flashlight is effectively mandatory because blinding the Hound is the only reliable escape.

Essential Mechanics Explained

One to four player co-op with proximity voice

Voice volume falls off with distance, so a teammate two rooms away is genuinely hard to hear. Entities react to that same audio, which turns shouting for directions into a real risk rather than a convenience.

Sanity and consumables

Sanity drains in darkness and isolation, and food restores it. Almond Water is the only item that restores 50 percent, while every other food item restores 25 percent, so carrying one bottle for the bad stretch is worth more than four snacks.

Entity avoidance rather than combat

There is essentially no fighting. Smilers refuse to enter lit areas, Hounds can be blinded with a flashlight, Partygoers lose you if you hide under the tables, and Wretches cannot catch a crouched player, so every threat is a movement puzzle.

Per-level puzzles and keys

Each level gates its exit behind a specific task. Level 0 needs a key from a cubby plus the scattered ladder pieces to reach it, the Electrical Station needs nine fuses collected three at a time per section, and Terror Hotel needs papers assembled into a door code.

Four endings plus the arcade finale

Endings A, B, C and D are reached through different exits, including the Grassrooms parkour route and the Level 922 stairwell behind the M.E.G. door. Collect all four, then return to Level 3999 and play the arcade machine there for the final escape.

Common Beginner Mistakes

1. Talking normally on proximity chat in a room with an active entity, then wondering how it found the group

This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.

2. Drinking Almond Water immediately for a small sanity top-up instead of saving the 50 percent restore for a dark stretch

This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.

3. Trying to fight entities, when the game is built entirely around light, crouching, hiding and line of sight

This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.

4. Splitting up to cover more ground, which reliably ends with one player lost and the whole team unable to reach the exit together

This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.

5. Sprinting through Level Fun instead of hiding under the tables when the music cuts out

This is a common trap that costs new players significant time.

First 5 Hours Checklist

  • Understand One to four player co-op with proximity voice and Sanity and consumables
  • Choose Scout as starting build
  • Clear The Lobby main content
  • Acquire Almond Water or equivalent upgrade
  • Reach Electrical Station
  • Treat proximity voice as a resource with a cost. Entities hear the same audio your teammates do, so agree on short call signs before you start rather than shouting full sentences in a room with a Smiler in it.
  • Carry Almond Water for the bad stretch instead of drinking it on sight. It restores 50 percent sanity against 25 percent for every other food item, which makes it the difference between recovering mid-level and having to retreat.

Tips for New Players

  1. Treat proximity voice as a resource with a cost. Entities hear the same audio your teammates do, so agree on short call signs before you start rather than shouting full sentences in a room with a Smiler in it.
  2. Carry Almond Water for the bad stretch instead of drinking it on sight. It restores 50 percent sanity against 25 percent for every other food item, which makes it the difference between recovering mid-level and having to retreat.
  3. Judge teammates by behaviour, not appearance. Skin-Stealers imitate players, and the reliable tells are movement that does not match how your friend plays plus a small white moving dot high up in the dark when they are undisguised.
  4. Stay inside lit areas when Smilers are active. They will not step into light, so a lit corridor is safer than a shorter dark shortcut every single time.
  5. Crouch by default in Wretch levels like Lights Out and the Darkened Suburbs. A crouched player cannot be caught, and a LiDAR scanner where available tracks how close one is.
  6. In Level Fun, get under the tables the moment the music stops. That silence is every Partygoer in the area roaring and converging on you, and the tables are the only reliable break in their pursuit.
  7. Assign the fuse run in the Electrical Station to one player and have everyone else cover. Nine fuses across three sections means a lot of backtracking, and a Hound catching the carrier resets the whole effort.
  8. Keep the group together at doorways and count heads. Teammates no-clip into other areas of the map, so a doorway headcount catches a separation before it turns into a solo player lost two levels behind.
  9. Bring bug spray into Terror Hotel and check thermometers for the hives. Deathmoths swarm in numbers there, and crouching past aggressive females only works when you are not already surrounded.
  10. Collect Endings A, B, C and D before going for the finale. Once you have all four, take the M.E.G. Base elevator down to Level 3999 and play the arcade machine to unlock the final escape.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players does it support?

One to four in online co-op. Every member of the team has to reach the exit alive for the escape to count, so a single lost player stalls the whole run.

Can you fight the entities?

Not meaningfully. Every entity is a movement and light puzzle: Smilers will not enter lit areas, Hounds can be blinded with a flashlight, Partygoers lose you under tables, and Wretches cannot catch a crouched player.

How does sanity work?

It drains in darkness and isolation and is restored by food. Almond Water restores 50 percent, while Juice, Energy Bars, Moth Jelly and other food items restore 25 percent each.

How many levels and endings are there?

More than 30 levels, including Level 0 The Lobby, Level 3 Electrical Station, Level 5 Terror Hotel, Level 37 The Poolrooms and Level Fun. There are four endings, A through D, plus a final escape unlocked at the Level 3999 arcade machine once you have all four.

Is it still the same game as the Early Access version?

It grew substantially. Fancy Games worked with Blackbird Interactive for the 1.0 release on 23 October 2025 under Secret Mode, expanding the level count and reworking earlier content.
