Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive released the 1.0 version of Escape the Backrooms on 23 October 2025, published by Secret Mode after several years in Early Access. One to four players no-clip through more than 30 levels built on backrooms creepypasta lore, and every member of the team has to reach the exit alive for the escape to count. Proximity voice chat carries the whole experience, because entities hear you as clearly as your friends do.
Boss fights are where Escape the Backrooms tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.
Boss Difficulty Overview
| Area | Difficulty | Recommended Build | Key Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Lobby | Easy | Scout | Almond Water |
| Electrical Station | Moderate | Scout | Almond Water |
| The Poolrooms | Hard | Navigator | Flashlight |
| Level Fun | Very Hard | Navigator | Flashlight |
| Terror Hotel | Extreme | Navigator | Flashlight |
The Lobby Bosses
Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Level 0, the opening area Recommended build: Scout with Almond Water
Strategy
The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Voice volume falls off with distance, so a teammate two rooms away is genuinely hard to hear. This is your primary tool here.
Key tips:
- Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
- Use One to four player co-op with proximity voice to create safe windows.
- Almond Water is enough to handle everything here.
Electrical Station Bosses
Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Level 3, early to mid run Recommended build: Scout with Almond Water
Strategy
Early game bosses test your understanding of Sanity and consumables. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.
Key tips:
- Sanity and consumables is critical for these fights.
- Farm Almond Water upgrades if you're struggling.
- Consider switching to Scout if your current setup isn't working.
The Poolrooms Bosses
Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Level 37 and 37.2, mid run Recommended build: Navigator with Flashlight
Strategy
Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.
Key tips:
- You need both One to four player co-op with proximity voice and Entity avoidance rather than combat mastery.
- Flashlight makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
- See our combat guide for advanced techniques.
Level Fun Bosses
Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Mid to late run, one of the hardest levels Recommended build: Navigator with Flashlight
Strategy
Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.
Key tips:
- Make sure your build is fully optimized.
- Flashlight at max upgrade is recommended.
- Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.
Terror Hotel Bosses
Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Level 5, mid run Recommended build: Navigator with Flashlight
Strategy
Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.
Key tips:
- Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
- Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
- These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.
General Boss Tips
- Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
- Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
- Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Flashlight trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
- Use One to four player co-op with proximity voice: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
- Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
