Europa Universalis IV Equipment Guide: Best Equipment Ranked

Complete Europa Universalis IV equipment guide. Every equipment option ranked with stats, best builds, and how to get them.

Researched and editorially reviewed. Updated .

Europa Universalis IV is a grand strategy sandbox spanning 1444 to 1821, where you steer one nation through war, trade, religion, and exploration. There is no single win condition, only the world you build from a one-province minor or a great power start. The systems interlock so tightly that one bad war can unravel a century of planning.

Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Equipment Progression Path

The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Western Europe
  2. Heavy Ships → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Cavalry → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. Cannons → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Equipment Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Never let monarch points cap at 999, spend them on tech, ideas, or developing your capital.
  • Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
