Far Cry 5 drops a deputy into Hope County, Montana, where Joseph Seed's Eden's Gate cult has taken the county apart and handed the pieces to three heralds. Holland Valley belongs to John, Henbane River to Faith and the Whitetail Mountains to Jacob, and each region runs its own Resistance meter that fills as you liberate outposts, wreck cult property and rescue civilians. Holland Valley needs 10,000 Resistance points to bring John out, while Henbane River and the Whitetail Mountains need 13,000 each. Everything else, the nine Guns for Hire and Fangs for Hire included, exists to make that number climb faster.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Dutch's Island)
The prologue island where Dutch equips you and explains the county. There is no Resistance meter here, and it functions as the tutorial for outposts, crafting and the perk system before the map opens.
Level/Difficulty: Prologue, no Resistance meter Key Rewards: First weapons, first perk points, map access
What to Do in Dutch's Island
- Learn Regional Resistance meters. Each of the three regions tracks its own Resistance total. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Nick Rye as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
- Cut the alarm before anything else at an outpost. Every cult outpost has alarms that call reinforcements, and clearing one undetected pays a bonus on top of the Resistance points, so the alarm box is the first target and the guard nearest it is the second.
- Acquire your first weapons upgrade: MS16 or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Regional Resistance meters fundamentals
- Nick Rye selected and functional
- Dutch's Island main content cleared
- Ready for Holland Valley
Phase 2: Early Game (Holland Valley)
John Seed's region in the south west, all farmland and open sightlines. Rye and Sons Aviation is here for Nick Rye and the Lamb of God Church for Grace Armstrong, and Seed Ranch is the centrepiece of John's story missions.
Level/Difficulty: 10,000 Resistance to confront John Seed Key Rewards: Nick Rye, Grace Armstrong, the Wingsuit and Grapple perks paid for early
What to Do in Holland Valley
- Work on Guns for Hire and Fangs for Hire. Six human specialists and three animals are recruited from named locations after named missions: Nick Rye at Rye and Sons Aviation, Grace Armstrong at the Lamb of God Church, Sharky Boshaw at Moonflower Trailer Park, Hurk Drubman Jr at Fort Drubman, Jess Black at the Baron Lumber Mill, Adelaide Drubman at Drubman Marina, plus Boomer, Cheeseburger and Peaches. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for MS16 if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Buy Leadership early. Running two Guns for Hire instead of one roughly doubles the pressure you can apply, and pairings like Grace Armstrong on overwatch with Boomer tagging enemies cover completely different jobs.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Henbane River.
- Consider whether Grace Armstrong might suit your playstyle better than Nick Rye.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Guns for Hire and Fangs for Hire integrated into gameplay
- MS16 acquired
- Holland Valley fully cleared
- Ready for Henbane River
Phase 3: Mid Game (Henbane River)
Faith Seed's region in the south east, where Bliss flowers distort what you see and hear. Moonflower Trailer Park recruits Sharky Boshaw, Drubman Marina recruits Adelaide Drubman, and Hope County Jail anchors the story missions.
Level/Difficulty: 13,000 Resistance to confront Faith Seed Key Rewards: Sharky Boshaw, Adelaide Drubman, helicopter access
What to Do in Henbane River
- Master Perk points and Prepper Stashes. Perks are bought with points earned from challenges and from Prepper Stashes, which are self-contained environmental puzzles hidden across all three regions. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward AR-C. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
- Prepper Stashes are the reliable source of perk points. They are self-contained puzzles rather than combat encounters, and clearing the ones in a region before starting its story missions means you enter the herald fights with the perks already bought.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Cult outposts and Outpost Master for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Perk points and Prepper Stashes mastered
- AR-C acquired or in progress
- Henbane River fully cleared
- Ready for Whitetail Mountains
Phase 4: Late Game (Whitetail Mountains)
Jacob Seed's region in the north, forested and vertical, with the Whitetail Militia as allies. The Baron Lumber Mill recruits Jess Black through the mission A Dish Best Served Cold, and Jacob's conditioning sequences are the region's signature.
Level/Difficulty: 13,000 Resistance to confront Jacob Seed Key Rewards: Jess Black, Whitetail Militia support, Cheeseburger at the F.A.N.G Center
What to Do in Whitetail Mountains
- Finalize your build. You should be running Grace Armstrong or Nick Rye with optimized gear.
- AR-C should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Story missions pay 600 to 900 Resistance points each, which is a large fraction of Holland Valley's 10,000 target. Mixing missions with outpost liberation fills a meter far faster than grinding cult property alone.
- Herald abductions optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Joseph's Compound.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- AR-C upgraded to max
- Whitetail Mountains fully cleared
- Ready for Joseph's Compound
Phase 5: Endgame (Joseph's Compound)
The island at the centre of the county, holding Joseph Seed himself. It opens only after all three heralds have fallen, and the final mission Where It All Began plays out there.
Level/Difficulty: After all three regional meters are filled Key Rewards: Story conclusion, final confrontation with Joseph Seed
What to Do in Joseph's Compound
- Joseph's Compound tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Boomer tags nearby enemies automatically, which turns every approach into a planned one. Bringing him to an outpost you intend to clear silently is worth more than bringing a second shooter.
- The endgame loop: run Joseph's Compound, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Boomer for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Herald abductions mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Joseph's Compound fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Opening fire at an outpost before disabling the alarm
- Saving perk points instead of buying Leadership for a second companion
- Skipping Prepper Stashes and then lacking perk points for Grapple and Wingsuit
- Starting in Henbane River, where Bliss removes the audio cues you have been relying on
- Running suppressed firearms without noticing the suppressor has degraded
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Cut the alarm before anything else at an outpost. Every cult outpost has alarms that call reinforcements, and clearing one undetected pays a bonus on top of the Resistance points, so the alarm box is the first target and the guard nearest it is the second.
- Buy Leadership early. Running two Guns for Hire instead of one roughly doubles the pressure you can apply, and pairings like Grace Armstrong on overwatch with Boomer tagging enemies cover completely different jobs.
