Ubisoft Montreal shipped For Honor on 14 February 2017 built around the Art of Battle, a melee system where every guard and every attack lives in one of three stances: top, left or right. The 18 mission campaign runs three chapters against Apollyon and her Blackstone Legion, and multiplayer has grown past 30 heroes split between the Knights, Vikings, Samurai, Wu Lin and Outlanders. Marching Fire added the Wu Lin in October 2018 along with Breach, the four against four castle assault mode.

FOR HONOR features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Citadel Gate: Starting Area

A Knight castle map under assault by a battering ram, split into the Gatehouse, the Battlefield and the Barracks. The three areas are very different fights, with the open middle favouring reach heroes and the interiors favouring anyone who can push others off ledges.

What to Do Here

Temple Garden: Early Game

The Samurai map most players name as the best looking in the game, with open lanes and clean sightlines between zones. Its layout makes rotations quick, so a team that captures two zones can defend both.

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Revenge meter. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for Kensei nodachi if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in River Fort.

River Fort: Mid Game

A Viking fort with working catapults and a great deal of water. Environmental kills are unusually common here because so many walkways end in a drop, which rewards heroes with bashes and throws.

Sentinel: Late Game

A tight Knight map where fights compress into corridors and stairwells rather than open ground. Long reach weapons lose value in the interior, and heroes that can bash opponents into walls gain it.

Key RewardsClose quarters advantage for Heavies, short rotation times

Key WeaponsWarden longsword

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Warden longsword should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Gear stats disabled in duels mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into High Fort.

High Fort: Endgame

Elevated Knight fortification with a strong vertical element and several exposed edges. Holding the upper zone gives a team the movement advantage, since defenders always arrive downhill and outnumbered.

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Outlanders for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Citadel Gate → Temple Garden → River Fort → Sentinel → High Fort. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
