Ubisoft Montreal shipped For Honor on 14 February 2017 built around the Art of Battle, a melee system where every guard and every attack lives in one of three stances: top, left or right. The 18 mission campaign runs three chapters against Apollyon and her Blackstone Legion, and multiplayer has grown past 30 heroes split between the Knights, Vikings, Samurai, Wu Lin and Outlanders. Marching Fire added the Wu Lin in October 2018 along with Breach, the four against four castle assault mode.

Your choice of weapons defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Weapons Progression Path

The order you should acquire weapons as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Citadel Gate
  2. Kensei nodachi → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Lawbringer poleaxe → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. Warden longsword → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Weapons Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary weapon before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your weapons to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Watch the opponent's guard indicator rather than their animation. The Art of Battle resolves on stance, so an attack coming from their right side is blocked by putting your guard on that side regardless of how the swing looks, and reading animations will make you late every time.
  • Check our tier list for how weapons rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
