Guild Wars 2 is ArenaNet's buy to play MMO, live since August 2012 and available on Steam since 23 August 2022. There is no subscription, the level cap has been 80 since launch, and stat gear stops at ascended, so long term progression runs through masteries, elite specializations and map completion instead of a gear treadmill. Six expansions have shipped, most recently Visions of Eternity on 28 October 2025, which handed every one of the nine professions a new elite specialization.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Guardian
Guardian is a top-performing option in Guild Wars 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Greatsword | A two handed power weapon carried by Guardian, Warrior, Mesmer, Ranger and Reaper, and it plays completely differently on each. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Weapon skills and elite specializations | Your first five skills come from the weapon in hand, so a staff Elementalist and a dagger Elementalist play like separate characters. |
How to Play Guardian
Guardian focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Greatsword does the damage and Weapon skills and elite specializations keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Revenant
Revenant is a strong option in Guild Wars 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Staff | The caster staple, though its role flips by profession. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Boons, conditions and combo fields | Might, Fury, Quickness, Alacrity, Protection and Aegis on one side, Bleeding, Burning, Torment and Confusion on the other, drive nearly all group damage and defence. |
How to Play Revenant
Revenant focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Staff with Boons, conditions and combo fields and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Engineer
Engineer is a strong option in Guild Wars 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Longbow | Ranger, Warrior and Dragonhunter all use it. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Dodge rolls and endurance | Every character has two dodges of endurance and there is no trinity style healer holding you upright. |
How to Play Engineer
Engineer focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Dodge rolls and endurance covers the gap Longbow leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Mesmer
Mesmer is a specialized option in Guild Wars 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Dagger | A fast main hand or off hand weapon for Elementalist, Thief, Necromancer and Revenant. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Dynamic events and level scaling | Maps run branching event chains that succeed or fail whether or not a player shows up, and characters scale down to the map's level so a level 80 in Queensdale fights at roughly level 15. |
How to Play Mesmer
Mesmer focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: This one leans on Dynamic events and level scaling rather than raw numbers, and Dagger is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Necromancer

Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Rifle | Used by Warrior, Engineer and Deadeye Thief. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Masteries, mounts and gliding | Masteries are account wide progression lines gated per expansion: gliding and updrafts in Heart of Thorns, mounts in Path of Fire, fishing and skiffs in End of Dragons. |
How to Play Necromancer
Necromancer focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Rifle and Masteries, mounts and gliding pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Revenant: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Guardian once you understand core mechanics and have access to Greatsword
- Keep a Engineer setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Necromancer for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Buy a full set of exotic gear from the trading post the moment you hit 80 rather than saving for ascended. Exotic sits about five percent below ascended in stats, costs a fraction as much, and covers every open world map, story instance and strike mission you will touch in your first hundred hours.
- Ascended armour and weapons exist mainly for one reason: agony resistance for Fractals of the Mists above tier one. If you never plan to run fractals, ascended is a convenience upgrade rather than a requirement, and legendary gear is a quality of life purchase that swaps stats freely rather than a power increase.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
