Guild Wars 2 is ArenaNet's buy to play MMO, live since August 2012 and available on Steam since 23 August 2022. There is no subscription, the level cap has been 80 since launch, and stat gear stops at ascended, so long term progression runs through masteries, elite specializations and map completion instead of a gear treadmill. Six expansions have shipped, most recently Visions of Eternity on 28 October 2025, which handed every one of the nine professions a new elite specialization.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Buy a full set of exotic gear from the trading post the moment you hit 80 rather than saving for ascended
Buy a full set of exotic gear from the trading post the moment you hit 80 rather than saving for ascended. Exotic sits about five percent below ascended in stats, costs a fraction as much, and covers every open world map, story instance and strike mission you will touch in your first hundred hours.
2. Ascended armour and weapons exist mainly for one reason: agony resistance for Fractals of the Mists above tier one
Ascended armour and weapons exist mainly for one reason: agony resistance for Fractals of the Mists above tier one. If you never plan to run fractals, ascended is a convenience upgrade rather than a requirement, and legendary gear is a quality of life purchase that swaps stats freely rather than a power increase.
3. Get to Path of Fire and unlock the Raptor early even if you intend to play the core story
Get to Path of Fire and unlock the Raptor early even if you intend to play the core story. Ground speed changes how the entire game feels, and every later mount, including the Skyscale, is gated behind having started that chain.
4. Level scaling means a level 80 in a starter zone fights near level 15, so helping a friend is genuinely playing the game rather than carrying them
Level scaling means a level 80 in a starter zone fights near level 15, so helping a friend is genuinely playing the game rather than carrying them. It also means map completion in low zones is worth doing at 80 for the Gift of Exploration a legendary weapon needs.
5. Learn your profession's dodge timings before you learn your rotation
Learn your profession's dodge timings before you learn your rotation. Guild Wars 2 has no dedicated healer holding a health bar up for you, and the difference between a clean strike mission and a wipe is almost always avoided damage rather than damage dealt.
6. In structured PvP everyone is normalised to level 80 with a chosen amulet and rune set, so gear grind does not exist there at all
In structured PvP everyone is normalised to level 80 with a chosen amulet and rune set, so gear grind does not exist there at all. It is the fastest way to learn a profession's skills under pressure without spending a copper on equipment.
7. Weaponmaster Training arrived with Secrets of the Obscure and lets any elite specialization use any weapon its profession can wield
Weaponmaster Training arrived with Secrets of the Obscure and lets any elite specialization use any weapon its profession can wield. Old build guides written before 2023 will steer you away from weapon pairings that are now perfectly legal, so check the guide's date.
8. Living World season episodes unlock free if you log in during the period they are given away, and cost gems otherwise
Living World season episodes unlock free if you log in during the period they are given away, and cost gems otherwise. Check the story journal for gaps before buying, because a missing episode blocks the map and the mastery that comes with it.
9. Crafting to 500 in one discipline is the standard route to your first ascended weapon, and it is deliberately slow because of time gated materials
Crafting to 500 in one discipline is the standard route to your first ascended weapon, and it is deliberately slow because of time gated materials. Start the daily craft on Deldrimor Steel or Elonian Leather early even if you are nowhere near needing them.
10. Visions of Eternity gave all nine professions a new elite specialization on 28 October 2025, including Troubadour for Mesmer and the returning Paragon for Warrior
Visions of Eternity gave all nine professions a new elite specialization on 28 October 2025, including Troubadour for Mesmer and the returning Paragon for Warrior. If your profession felt stale two years ago, the current specialization list is not the one you remember.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Guardian (A-Tier):
- Focus on Weapon skills and elite specializations combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Greatsword
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Revenant (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Staff
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how Guild Wars 2's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Weapon skills and elite specializations + Boons, conditions and combo fields: Your first five skills come from the weapon in hand, so a staff Elementalist and a dagger Elementalist play like separate characters. Combined with Boons, conditions and combo fields, might, fury, quickness, alacrity, protection and aegis on one side, bleeding, burning, torment and confusion on the other, drive nearly all group damage and defence.
Dodge rolls and endurance + Dynamic events and level scaling: Every character has two dodges of endurance and there is no trinity style healer holding you upright. When paired with Dynamic events and level scaling, maps run branching event chains that succeed or fail whether or not a player shows up, and characters scale down to the map's level so a level 80 in queensdale fights at roughly level 15.
Masteries, mounts and gliding scaling: Masteries are account wide progression lines gated per expansion: gliding and updrafts in Heart of Thorns, mounts in Path of Fire, fishing and skiffs in End of Dragons. Mounts arrive in a set order starting with the Raptor, and the Skyscale is still the longest single unlock in the game.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Greatsword | Power builds and open world clearing, where cleave damage matters more than single target output. | A two handed power weapon carried by Guardian, Warrior, Mesmer, Ranger and Reaper, and it plays completely differently on each. |
| Staff | Ranged pressure and support, especially in world versus world where positioning beats raw damage. | The caster staple, though its role flips by profession. |
| Longbow | Staying at range in open world and in fights where standing in melee is a losing proposition. | Ranger, Warrior and Dragonhunter all use it. |
| Dagger | High attack speed melee builds and anything that wants short cooldowns rather than big single hits. | A fast main hand or off hand weapon for Elementalist, Thief, Necromancer and Revenant. |
| Rifle | Single target burst at range, and for Deadeye specifically, killing one priority target very quickly. | Used by Warrior, Engineer and Deadeye Thief. |
Location Efficiency
Queensdale (1 to 15): The human starter zone outside Divinity's Reach, and still the busiest low level map on most servers. Its event chains and renown hearts are the standard first hour of the game for new accounts.
Lion's Arch (Any level): The central hub city, rebuilt after the Living World season one attack. Every asura gate, the trading post, bank access, guild services and most world boss meetups run through it.
Verdant Brink (80): The first Heart of Thorns map, and the one that teaches gliding and vertical map design. It runs a day and night cycle where the map shifts from ground objectives to night bosses.
Crystal Oasis (80): The opening Path of Fire map and where the Raptor mount is handed over almost immediately. Its wide open desert exists specifically to make you want the rest of the mount roster.
Seitung Province (80): The first End of Dragons map, set in Cantha after roughly two decades away from the setting. It introduces fishing and the skiff, and its meta event runs on a fixed timer.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Grinding for ascended gear before finishing the core story, when exotic covers every open world encounter in the game.
- Skipping the Raptor and the mount chain because the core story does not require it, then spending a hundred hours on foot.
- Treating a profession as one build, when each elite specialization changes the profession mechanic and effectively creates a new class.
- Ignoring dodge and trying to out heal telegraphed attacks in strikes and raids, which no amount of healing power fixes.
- Following a build guide written before Weaponmaster Training in 2023 and assuming the weapon restrictions it lists still apply.

- Start with Revenant, switch to Guardian when ready
- Invest in Greatsword above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Queensdale → Lion's Arch → Verdant Brink → Crystal Oasis → Seitung Province. See our maps guide
- Weapon skills and elite specializations + Boons, conditions and combo fields together are stronger than either alone
