Arc System Works released GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- on 11 June 2021 and is still adding fighters five years later. The roster stands at 33 in Season 5, which opened on 9 April 2026 alongside the Version 2.00 update and Jam Kuradoberi. That patch removed Wild Assault and added Counter Blitz, so combo footage recorded in 2024 no longer matches the build you install today.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best characters, weapons worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Tension and the four Roman Cancels
Every Roman Cancel costs 50 percent Tension and comes out on three attack buttons other than Dust. Red cancels during hit or blockstun, Purple during your own recovery, Blue from neutral, and Yellow is the defensive version used in blockstun.
Wall Break and Positive Bonus
Pinning an opponent in the corner builds wall damage, and breaking the wall moves the fight to a new area and hands the attacker Positive Bonus, which speeds up Tension gain. Most rounds are decided by who reaches that break first.
Burst gauge, Psych Burst and Counter Blitz
The Burst gauge pays for Psych Burst, Deflect Shield and, since Version 2.00, Counter Blitz. Counter Blitz spends 50 percent of the gauge during counter hit slow down on a cancelable normal and forces a Wall Break when the final hit lands near the corner.
R.I.S.C. Level and Faultless Defense
R.I.S.C. Level rises while you block and inflates the damage of the next clean hit, which is why blocking forever loses rounds in this game. Faultless Defense drains Tension, cancels chip damage and pushes the attacker further away.
Ranked Match and the Duel Tower
Ranked Match tracks each character separately from Iron through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond to Vanquisher at 45,000 Rate Points, after which players compete on Duel Rating across three month phases. The old floor ladder is now the Duel Tower and serves as the casual track.

Weapons Guide
| Weapon | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Roman Cancel | The core Tension spender at 50 percent per use, with Red, Purple, Blue and Yellow versions covering offence, recovery cancelling, neutral and defence. | Extending combos, making unsafe moves safe and buying a reset in neutral |
| Psych Burst | The Burst gauge escape that knocks the opponent away mid combo. | Escaping a combo that would otherwise take a full health bar |
| Faultless Defense | A Tension draining block that removes chip damage and increases pushback, held by blocking with two attack buttons. | Creating space during pressure you cannot mash your way out of |
| Wall Break | Not a move but a state: corner damage builds the wall, and breaking it moves the fight to a new area and awards Positive Bonus to the attacker. | Converting a corner sequence into a Tension advantage for the next exchange |
| Counter Blitz | Added in Version 2. | Turning a stray counter hit into corner carry and a full Wall Break |
Roman Cancel: The core Tension spender at 50 percent per use, with Red, Purple, Blue and Yellow versions covering offence, recovery cancelling, neutral and defence.
Psych Burst: The Burst gauge escape that knocks the opponent away mid combo. Spending it leaves you with no gauge for Deflect Shield or Counter Blitz until it refills.
Faultless Defense: A Tension draining block that removes chip damage and increases pushback, held by blocking with two attack buttons.
Wall Break: Not a move but a state: corner damage builds the wall, and breaking it moves the fight to a new area and awards Positive Bonus to the attacker.
Counter Blitz: Added in Version 2.00 on 9 April 2026. It costs 50 percent of the Burst gauge during counter hit slow down on a cancelable normal and triggers a Wall Break if the last hit connects near the corner.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Duel Tower Floors 1 to 10 | New players through intermediate | Low pressure matches, floor promotion, a place to test a new character |
| Celestial Floor | Advanced | Matches against the strongest players on the tower track |
| Ranked Match | Any rank, but built for players committed to one character | Rank progression, seasonal Duel Rating placement, Blazing Pass rewards |
| Mission Mode | Beginner to intermediate | Mechanical understanding that transfers directly to ranked play |
| Training Mode | All levels | Combo routes, punish confirmation, matchup specific answers |
Duel Tower Floors 1 to 10: The floor based ladder, renamed from the old Rank Tower. Placement matches you against players of similar skill and now functions as the casual, social track rather than the competitive one.
Celestial Floor: The top of the Duel Tower, above Floor 10. Reaching it has always been the informal marker that a player has mastered the game's fundamentals.
Ranked Match: The competitive ladder, tracked per character from Iron up to Vanquisher at 45,000 Rate Points. Vanquisher players compete on Duel Rating in three month phases, and the top 100 per character carry the Imperius title.
Mission Mode: Structured single player drills covering system mechanics and character specific tools, including Roman Cancel timings and defensive options.
Training Mode: The lab, with recording, playback and frame data displays. Version 2.00 added an Attack Interval readout so you can confirm whether a block string has a gap in it.
See our maps & locations guide for detailed area breakdowns and our walkthrough for the optimal progression path.
Tips That Actually Matter
- Learn Red Roman Cancel before any other version. It cancels the recovery of your last move while the opponent is in hit or blockstun, which is the single mechanic that turns stray hits into real damage in this game.
- Stop bursting on the first hit of a combo. Psych Burst is your only escape and it also pays for Deflect Shield and Counter Blitz, so spending it early leaves you with no defensive option for the rest of the round.
- Fight for the corner from the opening exchange. Wall damage accumulates there, and the Wall Break that follows hands you Positive Bonus and faster Tension gain going into the next sequence.
- Use Faultless Defense when you are pinned rather than pressing a button. It costs Tension but removes chip damage and pushes the attacker far enough away that their next move whiffs.
- Watch your R.I.S.C. Level while defending. Blocking safely still fills it, and once it is high a single clean hit does far more damage than the same hit at neutral, so you need to interrupt at some point.
- Pick one character and stay with them for a month. Ranked Match tracks progress per character, so switching every few days resets the only feedback signal the ladder gives you.
- Re check any combo video older than April 2026. Version 2.00 removed Wild Assault and added Counter Blitz, so routes built around the old mechanic simply do not work now.
- Run Mission Mode before your first ranked set. It drills the system mechanics in isolation, which is far faster than trying to work out Roman Cancel timings while losing matches.
- Use the Attack Interval display in Training Mode to check whether the block string that keeps beating you actually has a gap. If it does, you have a mash window; if it does not, you need Faultless Defense or a Yellow Roman Cancel.
- Treat the Duel Tower as practice and Ranked Match as the real ladder. Since the ranked overhaul, the tower is the casual track, so the floors you sit on say very little about your competitive rank.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Blocking for entire rounds. R.I.S.C. Level rises the whole time, so the eventual hit you take does far more damage than it would have at the start.
- Spending Tension on Overdrives that do not close the round. A single Red Roman Cancel usually generates more damage than the special move you cashed the meter into.
- Bursting out of every combo. Once the gauge is gone you have no Psych Burst, no Deflect Shield and no Counter Blitz until it refills.
- Learning the game from pre 2026 footage. Season 5 and Version 2.00 changed the mechanic set, so old guides teach a system that is no longer in the build.
- Switching characters after every loss. Ranked ratings are per character, so constant switching keeps every rank low and hides whether you are improving.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many characters are in Guilty Gear Strive?
Thirty three as of Season 5 in mid 2026. Fifteen shipped with the base game in June 2021 and the rest arrived across five DLC seasons, the most recent being Jam Kuradoberi on 9 April 2026.
What changed in Version 2.00?
It launched on 9 April 2026 with Jam, a new stage, a rebuilt main menu and character select, expanded Ranked Match tiers inside Vanquisher, and a mechanic swap: Wild Assault was removed and Counter Blitz was added.
Do I need the season pass?
No. The base roster is complete and playable online, and DLC characters can be bought individually. Season Pass 5 covers Jam, Robo-Ky in summer 2026, a guest character in winter 2026 and a fourth fighter in spring 2027.
How does ranked work now?
Ranked Match runs per character from Iron to Vanquisher at 45,000 Rate Points, then on Duel Rating in three month phases, with the Imperius title for the top 100 per character. The old floor ladder became the Duel Tower and is the casual track.
Which character should a beginner pick?
Sol Badguy or Ky Kiske. Both have a fireball, an anti air uppercut and simple confirms, which lets you spend your attention on Roman Cancels and corner pressure instead of a character specific resource.
