Heroes of Might and Magic III - HD Edition is DotEmu's 2015 remaster of the 1999 turn-based strategy classic, released on 29 January 2015. Read the contents before you buy, because this is the base game only. It carries the 7 Restoration of Erathia campaigns, around 50 skirmish maps, a map editor, local multiplayer and a Steamworks online lobby. It does not include Armageddon's Blade, it does not include Shadow of Death, and it has no random map generator, because the generator shipped with Armageddon's Blade rather than with the original release. That also means eight town factions rather than nine: there is no Conflux. Players who want the generator, the Conflux and the combination artifacts generally buy the Complete edition on GOG instead.

Boss fights are where Heroes of Might and Magic III - HD Edition tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Long Live the Queen Bosses

Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Campaign 1 of 7, three maps Recommended build: Rampart with Gold Dragon

Strategy

The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Every hero has a movement pool per day that shrinks off-road and grows with a Stables visit, the Logistics skill or a fast slowest creature in the army. This is your primary tool here.

Key tips:

  • Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
  • Use Adventure map movement and turns to create safe windows.
  • Gold Dragon is enough to handle everything here.

Dungeons and Devils Bosses

Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Campaign 2 of 7, three maps Recommended build: Rampart with Gold Dragon

Strategy

Early game bosses test your understanding of Town building and creature growth. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.

Key tips:

  • Town building and creature growth is critical for these fights.
  • Farm Gold Dragon upgrades if you're struggling.
  • Consider switching to Rampart if your current setup isn't working.

Spoils of War Bosses

Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Campaign 3 of 7, three maps Recommended build: Castle with Archangel

Strategy

Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.

Key tips:

  • You need both Adventure map movement and turns and Hero skills and spellbooks mastery.
  • Archangel makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
  • See our combat guide for advanced techniques.

Long Live the King Bosses

Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Campaign 5 of 7 Recommended build: Castle with Archangel

Strategy

Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.

Key tips:

  • Make sure your build is fully optimized.
  • Archangel at max upgrade is recommended.
  • Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.

Seeds of Discontent Bosses

Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Campaign 7 of 7 Recommended build: Castle with Archangel

Strategy

Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.

Key tips:

  • Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
  • Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
  • These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.

General Boss Tips

  1. Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
  2. Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
  3. Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Archangel trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
  4. Use Adventure map movement and turns: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
  5. Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
