New World Interactive released this tactical shooter on 12 December 2018, and it still refuses to give you a crosshair, a killcam or a minimap. Matches run up to 14 versus 14 in PvP or as co-op Checkpoint missions against AI, and one rifle round through a doorway usually ends the argument. Focus Entertainment keeps shipping free updates, with Operation Shell Shock in October 2025 adding the S12K and US12 shotguns.

Insurgency: Sandstorm features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Farmhouse: Starting Area

A large rural map built around medium to long range engagements between farm buildings and open fields. Crossing open ground without smoke is close to suicide, and the buildings themselves are the only reliable cover.

Crossing: Early Game

Set in a canyon, which is why its internal name is Canyon. The terrain gives enormous sightlines along the valley floor with limited cover, so flanking through the higher ground beats pushing straight down the middle.

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Eight roles with team limits. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for AKM if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in Hideout.

Hideout: Mid Game

A dense suburban map, internally named Town, with a large number of enterable buildings. The mix of long streets and packed interiors means both a marksman and a shotgun Breacher find work on the same objective.

Precinct: Late Game

Urban fighting through a police compound and the blocks around it, where most of the objective work happens indoors at very short range. Grenades and flashbangs decide rooms far more often than marksmanship does.

Key RewardsClose quarters discipline, breaching practice, and clear value for the Breacher role
Recommended RoleRifleman

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • M4A1 should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Push and Checkpoint objectives mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Summit.

Summit: Endgame

A mountain map, internally named Mountain, where elevation changes break sightlines into short unpredictable segments. Holding the high ground helps, but the approaches to it are exposed enough that taking it usually costs bodies.

AttributeDetail
DifficultyStrong in Push and Frontline
Key RewardsVertical angles, ambush positions, and practice fighting uphill under fire support
Recommended RoleRifleman
Key WeaponsM4A1

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Commander for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Farmhouse → Crossing → Hideout → Precinct → Summit. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
