Outer Wilds is a time-loop exploration game where you explore a miniature solar system that resets every 22 minutes when the sun goes supernova. Your only progression is knowledge — learning how the alien Nomai civilization connected the planets, why the time loop exists, and what happens at the end. There are no upgrades, no unlocks, no skills. Everything you need to reach the ending is available from minute one — you just need to know where to go and what to do. This makes Outer Wilds one of gaming's most unique experiences and one that absolutely cannot be replayed once completed. Every discovery is genuine, every puzzle solved through understanding, and the ending is profoundly moving.
Outer Wilds features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order — what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Timber Hearth | Starting location | Ship access, basic lore, village dialogue, underground Nomai ruins | Speed Runner |
| 2 | Brittle Hollow | Early-mid exploration | Southern Observatory, Tower of Quantum Knowledge, Nomai history | Speed Runner |
| 3 | Giant Deep | Mid | Progression materials | Explorer |
| 4 | Dark Bramble | Mid-late exploration | Vessel location, Escape Pod data, anglerfish avoidance mastery | Explorer |
| 5 | Ash Twin | Late exploration (critical story) | Ash Twin Project, time loop explanation, endgame access | Explorer |
Timber Hearth — Starting Area
Your home planet and starting location. The village has a model solar system, your ship, and several Hearthians with dialogue that hints at mysteries. The planet itself has an underground cave system with early Nomai text. Every loop starts here.

What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of time loop exploration — this is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Brittle Hollow.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Brittle Hollow — Early Game
A planet with a fragile crust that collapses into the black hole at its core over the 22-minute loop. Early in the loop, the surface is explorable. Late in the loop, pieces have fallen away, revealing the Southern Observatory and other structures. Timing matters — visit surfaces before they collapse.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Early-mid exploration |
| Key Rewards | Southern Observatory, Tower of Quantum Knowledge, Nomai history |
| Recommended Build | Speed Runner |
| Key Equipment | Signalscope |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering space navigation — it's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Signalscope if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Giant Deep.
Giant Deep — Mid Game
Giant Deep is the mid-game checkpoint that tests your build and mechanical skill.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Intermediate |
| Key Rewards | Progression materials and gear upgrades |
| Recommended Build | Explorer |
| Key Equipment | Signalscope |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Scout Launcher becomes accessible here — prioritize getting it.
- Master knowledge-based progression for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Dark Bramble — Late Game
A terrifying space filled with fog, anglerfish, and dimensional pockets. Sound attracts anglerfish — you must navigate silently. Dark Bramble contains critical late-game information but is the most anxiety-inducing location in the game.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid-late exploration |
| Key Rewards | Vessel location, Escape Pod data, anglerfish avoidance mastery |
| Recommended Build | Explorer |
| Key Equipment | Scout Launcher |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Scout Launcher should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- quantum mechanics puzzles mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Ash Twin.
Ash Twin — Endgame
A planet in a binary pair with Ember Twin. Sand flows from Ash Twin to Ember Twin over the loop, revealing and hiding structures. The Ash Twin Project is the key to the entire game's mystery. Understanding the sand flow timing unlocks critical access.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Late exploration (critical story) |
| Key Rewards | Ash Twin Project, time loop explanation, endgame access |
| Recommended Build | Explorer |
| Key Equipment | Scout Launcher |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with First Timer for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order — Timber Hearth → Brittle Hollow → Giant Deep → Dark Bramble → Ash Twin. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner — Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment — Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough — Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush — Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
