Outer Wilds Equipment Guide — Best Equipment Ranked

Complete Outer Wilds equipment guide. Every equipment option ranked with stats, best builds, and how to get them.

Outer Wilds is a time-loop exploration game where you explore a miniature solar system that resets every 22 minutes when the sun goes supernova. Your only progression is knowledge — learning how the alien Nomai civilization connected the planets, why the time loop exists, and what happens at the end. There are no upgrades, no unlocks, no skills. Everything you need to reach the ending is available from minute one — you just need to know where to go and what to do. This makes Outer Wilds one of gaming's most unique experiences and one that absolutely cannot be replayed once completed. Every discovery is genuine, every puzzle solved through understanding, and the ending is profoundly moving.

Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

S-Tier: Scout Launcher

Fires a scout probe that provides photographs and light in dark areas. The scout can be launched into caves, rifts, and hazardous areas to see what's inside before you enter. It also marks your position when shot at surfaces, helping with navigation.

Recommended BuildExplorer

How to get it: Available from mid-game onward. See our walkthrough for the exact progression point.

Best builds using Scout Launcher: Pairs naturally with Explorer thanks to stat scaling synergies.

A-Tier: Signalscope

A directional microphone that detects signals — Traveler instruments, distress beacons, quantum fluctuations, and other sounds. Following signals leads to key locations and undiscovered content. The Signalscope is your primary tool for finding new areas to explore.

Recommended BuildSpeed Runner

How to get it: Accessible in the early-to-mid game. Check our maps guide for the location.

Equipment Progression Path

The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Timber Hearth
  2. Signalscope → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Translator Tool → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. Scout Launcher → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Equipment Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying — one strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Knowledge is your only progression. Nothing carries between loops except what you've learned and what the ship log records. If you're stuck, you're missing information, not an ability.
  • Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
